Tigers Fall to Colgate 3-2 in ECACHL Quarterfinal
February 24, 2007 | Women's Ice Hockey
Colgate's Tara French scored with three minutes left in regulation to lift the Raiders to a 3-2 win over the Princeton women's hockey team on Saturday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Junior Marykate Oakley scored twice for Princeton in the game, as the Tigers finished the 2006-07 season with a 16-12-3 record.
For the second night in a row, Princeton controlled play territorially in the first two periods, outshooting the Raiders 29-16 through two periods. The Tigers opened the scoring at 14:23 when Oakley connected with her 14th goal of the season. Oakley won an offensive zone draw back to senior Kim Pearce, who fired a quick shot on net that was saved by Colgate's Brook Wheeler. The rebound came to Oakley who stuffed it by her to put the Tigers on the board.
The Raiders responded two minutes later with power-play goal while skating with a two-player advantage. Tara French played the puck to Sam Hunt from the point. Hunt took a shot down low that bounced off Princeton sophomore netminder Kristen Young and over her. As it sailed above the crease, Katie Stewart swatted out of the air and into the net to get the Raiders on the board.
Neither team was able to scored in the second period and the score remained tied as the third began. Midway through the period, Young was injured on a scramble in front of the net. She made two big saves down low, but was forced to leave the game at 8:08 of the third.
Freshman Brittany Parisi came into the game for the Tigers, but was unable to get the first shot she saw as Stewart beat her short-side to put Colgate up 2-1. Hunt and French set up the goal.
Princeton answered back on the power play at 13:55 when Oakley notched her second goal of the game. Pearce fed the puck to senior Kate Hession at the point, who blasted a shot that was saved by Wheeler. The rebound came to Oakley, who was able to lift it by Wheeler to knot things up.
Tied at 2-2 late in the third, the game appeared destined for overtime for the second day in a row, but at 17:04, French's point shot through a screen eluded Parisi and gave Colgate a 3-2 lead.
Princeton pulled Parisi in favor of the extra attacker late, but could draw even and the Raiders pulled out the win.
Wheeler finished the night with 32 saves for Colgate, while Young made 21 and Parisi made two for Princeton.
