Tigers Drop Pitcher's Duel at UNC Greensboro 2-1
March 18, 2007 | Baseball
The Princeton baseball team was on the wrong side of a pitcher's duel on Sunday, falling 2-1 at UNC Greensboro. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Tigers evened the score with a run in the third, but fell behind in the fifth as UNC Greensboro took its second straight win in the series.
Junior starting pitcher Steven Miller was solid through five innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. His counterpart from UNCG was equally good, as Alex Shelton surrendered six hits and a single run in 5.2 innings.
The Spartans jumped to a 1-0 lead with a run in their first at bat. Tim Carrier led off the game with a single and he scored when Matt Gaski doubled to center field. UNCG managed to load the bases in the inning, but Miller was able to get a fly ball to get out of the inning.
Princeton answered back with a run in the third to draw even at 1-1. Freshman Greg Van Horn hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI-double from senior Sal Iacono.
The Tigers threatened again in the fifth inning, loading the bases on singles by junior Spencer Lucian and sophomore Dan DeGeorge, and a walk to Iacono. UNCG, however, got out of the jam when freshman Jack Murphy flied out.
UNCG got out of the Princeton threat and took advantage with a run of its own in the bottom half of the inning. Carrier hit a one-out single and scored later on the inning on a Greg Feltes sac fly.
Princeton only managed one base-runner, a sixth-inning walk to junior Micah Kaplan, from there as UNC Greensboro shut down the Tiger hitters over the final three innings for the win.
Senior Michael Zaret pitched three scoreless innings for Princeton to close out the game, while Clinton McKinney was perfect over the same span for UNCG.
Princeton falls to 1-7 with the loss and will look to salvage the three-game set tomorrow when the teams conclude their series at 6 p.m.
