Women's Water Looks For Third-Straight ECAC Title This Weekend
March 02, 2007 | Women's Water Polo
The 18th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team returns to the pool after a two-week layoff from competition this weekend at the ECAC Championships at Harvard. Princeton is the two-time defending champion of the eight-team tournament and has taken the championship in six of the last eight seasons.
The Tigers took the ECAC Championship last season with wins over Villanova, Wagner and Bucknell. Princeton is again the top seed for this year's tournament and will face the eight-seed Slippery Rock in the first round. After that Princeton will face either fourth-seeded Maryland or fifth-seeded Marist. Princeton has faced both Maryland and Marist this season and defeated both.
Princeton has split its first eight games this season as it has taken on a very challenging schedule. The Tigers have faced five ranked opponents in that span. Princeton is 4-4 overall and has beaten No. 12 Santa Clara, Maryland, Marist and Indiana. This weekend's ECAC Championships, which features two CWPA Southern teams in addition to Princeton, will serve as a tune-up to the Tigers first league weekend as Princeton hosts both Bucknell and Maryland at DeNunzio Pool next weekend. The Tigers then travel to California for Spring Break before returning to league play in late March.
Senior Elyse Colgan leads Princeton with 20 goals this season and currently ranks fourth in the nation in goals scored. Colgan is one of nine Tigers to have scored goals in the team's first eight games. Senior Karina Reyner ranks second with 11 goals and freshman Lauren Sabb rounds out the top three with 10 goals this season. Junior Natalie Kim has made 70 saves in eight games defending the Tiger cage. Her save total also ranks fourth nationally as she has averaged 8.8 saves per game.
