Tigers Rally For Win at Longwood
March 24, 2007 | Baseball
FARMVILLE, Va. -- The Princeton baseball team scored four runs over the final two innings to come from behind and defeat Longwood 4-2 on Saturday night at Lancer Field. Freshman Jack Murphy had a pinch-hit RBI single and classmate Langford Stuber earned the win in relief.
For the second day in a row, the game was a battle of the pitchers. Longwood's Kevin Light held the Tigers to just three hits through seven-plus innings, while Princeton junior Steve Miller gave the Tigers five good innings, scattering three hits for two runs in five innings. He struck out eight batters and walked three.
Longwood broke a scoreless deadlock in the fourth inning by pushing two runs home. Casey Havers hit a leadoff single and the Lancers then loaded the bases with two consecutive walks. With the bases full and no outs, Frank Berry hit a sac fly to right center to score the first run. Miller then got two consecutive strikeouts, but a wild pitch on the third strike of the second one, allowed the second run to come home.
Princeton evened the score as it was able to get to Light in the top of the eighth when Light hit sophomore Derek Beckman and walked senior Aaron Prince to begin the inning. Longwood took at Light at that point in favor of reliever John Walker. Sophomore Dan DeGeorge then singled on the first pitch he saw to load the bases for senior Sal Iacono. Iacono the hit a fly ball to left field that was bobbled, allowing Beckman to score the first run. A second error on the relay allowed Prince to score equalizer.
The Tigers then went ahead an inning later with two runs in the top of the ninth. Freshman David Hale hit a one-out single and went to third when sophomore Adrian Turnham hit a pinch-hit single to left field. Freshman Greg Van Horn came on to pinch run for Turnham. Then with Jack Murphy pinch hitting, a wild pitch let Hale score from third and good base running sent Van Horn to third, and he was able to score when Murphy singled through the right side.
Stuber came on in the sixth inning and pitched four scoreless innings to record the win. He struck out six, including all three batters in the ninth, and allowed no hits.
Princeton is now 4-9 with the win. The teams complete their three game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
