March 25, 2007 | Baseball
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood scored a run in the bottom of the 11th inning to defeat the Princeton baseball team 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Lancer Stadium. Sophomore Dan DeGeorge drove in a pair of runs for the Tigers.
The teams traded runs in the third inning. In the top half of the third for the Tigers, freshman Brandon Englert led off with a walk and went to second on a sac bunt, before scoring on senior Sal Iacono's single to left field. In the bottom of the inning, Scott Kimble doubled and then scored on a Tyler Ames single.
Longwood went ahead 2-1 in the fifth inning when Robbie Bailey led off with a single to left field. He stole second, was sacrificed over to third and scored on a sac fly.
The lead changed hands again in the seventh inning when the Tigers plated two runs to go ahead 3-2. With one out, sophomore Derek Beckman singled over the head of the short stop. Freshman Greg Van Horn then hit a fielder's choice, but the throw at second was late and both runners were safe with sophomore Dan DeGeorge coming to bat. DeGeorge took advantage of having two on, and doubled to right field to plate both runners and give Princeton a 3-2 edge.
Longwood answered back in the bottom of the inning to draw even at 3-3. A bunt single and two walks loaded the bases for Jon Quigly, whose sac fly plated the equalizer.
Longwood threatened in the bottom of the 10th, putting two on with two outs, but sophomore Andrew Doupe tracked down a fly ball in right center to push the game to the 11th inning.
Longwood won the game in the 11th when two walks put two runners on with two outs for Topher Ellis, who singled up the middle to plate the winning run.
Princeton sophomore starter Brad Gemberling pitched a hitless first inning before leaving the game with soreness in his shoulder. Senior Eric Walz came on to pitch the next four innings and allowed two runs on five hits. Senior Gavin Fabian pitched 4.1 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
The game concluded Princeton's week-long Spring Break trip. The Tigers open up their home schedule on Wednesday afternoon against Rutgers.
