Rutgers Defeats Princeton Baseball 12-4
March 28, 2007 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- Rutgers used a three-run fifth inning to break open a tight game and defeat the Princeton baseball team 12-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Clarke Field. Freshmen Greg Van Horn and David Hale, along with senior Sal Iacono had two hits apiece for the Tigers, which dropped their home opener.
The Tigers managed 10 hits in the game, but couldn't place them together at the right times as Princeton fell to 4-11 on the season. Seven Tigers had hits in the game.
The teams traded runs in the first inning as Rutgers was first on the board, using an infield single, two stolen bases and a sac fly to jump to a 1-0 lead. The Tigers answered a half-inning later as a walk, a fielder's choice and an Iacono double off the wall in left field knotted the score.
Rutgers regained the lead in the third inning by means of a double by Todd Frazier, a sac bunt to get him to third and another sac fly. Rutgers then padded its lead to 5-1 with three runs in the fifth inning. With two out and one on base, Tim Querns hit a fly ball to left field that was misplayed and resulted in runners on second and third. A wild pitch scored the first runner, and a home run from Tom Edwards put two more runs on the board for Rutgers.
Princeton chipped one of those runs off in the bottom of the inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases before sophomore Dan DeGeorge hit a fielder's choice. Rutgers opted to try for the out at second base but the runner was safe, allowing a run to score.
The teams again traded runs in the sixth inning to make the score 6-3. Frazier hit a solo homer for Rutgers in the top of the inning and freshman Jack Murphy did the same, his third home run of the season, in the bottom of the frame.
Rutgers built on its lead with four runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth, while, Princeton was able to add a run in the eighth on a sophomore Adrian Turnham's double.
Freshman Jon Broscious took the loss. He allowed two runs in four innings. Jon McCue earned the win for Rutgers with 7.2 innings of work.
Princeton begins its Ivy League schedule on Saturday at 12 noon when Brown visits Clarke Field.
