Penn Defeats Men's Tennis 5-2 In Ivy Opener
March 31, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Peter Capkovic and Charlie Brosens both picked up singles victories in the Ivy League opener for the men's tennis team, but it was the University of Pennsylvania that left with a team victory. The Quakers picked up the doubles point in a tiebreak and added a pair of three-set wins in singles to grab the victory, while Princeton fell to 7-5 overall.
A win at No. 3 doubles by Alex Krueger-Wyman and Sratha Saengsuwarn evened the first session of matches at 1, and Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic were a tiebreak away from giving Princeton a 1-0 lead, but Mikhail Bekker and Jonathan Boym came up with the key points to grab the match and the early edge.
Capkovic, Princeton's No. 1 singles player, renewed a rivalry with Penn No. 1 Jason Pinsky. The two played on consecutive weekends in the fall, with Pinsky defeating Capkovic in the "A" bracket final at Princeton's Farnsworth Invitational and Capkovic winning in a deciding proset at the ECAC Division I team championship the next weekend. The rubber match went Princeton's way, as Capkovic earned a 7-6, 6-4 win.
Unfortunately for the home team, Penn picked up a pair of straight-set wins to move within one match of the win. Three singles matches went to a third set, and while Brosens picked up a tiebreak victory, the Quakers took wins at No. 2 and No. 5 to clinch the win.
Princeton, currently No. 65 in the national rankings, will continue Ivy League play next Friday in Providence when it takes on Brown at 2 p.m.
