Baseball Picks Up First Win of 2007 at Elon
March 04, 2007 | Baseball
ELON, N.C. -- Senior Sal Iacono had four hits and drove in two runs to help lead the Princeton baseball team to its first win of the 2007 season on Sunday afternoon at Elon. Princeton won the third game of the series 11-6 after being swept in a doubleheader on Saturday. Sophomore Andrew Doupe and freshman Greg Van Horn both had three hits.
Princeton wasted little time jumping in front as the Tigers jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first inning before Elon had a chance to bat. In the inning, Princeton's first five batters all reached base as senior Aaron Princeton had a leadoff walk and scored on a double by sophomore Dan DeGeorge. The Iacono singled to put two on for freshman Jack Murphy, who singled to plate DeGeorge. Freshman Brian Berkowitz had an RBI-single in the inning and then Can Horn doubled home two runs before sophomore Derek Beckman plated the final run of the inning on a groundout.
Princeton added a run in the second to go up 7-0 when a sac fly from sophomore Adrian Turnham scored DeGeorge. Elon chipped three runs off the Princeton lead in the third inning on a pair of home runs and then took two more runs off the lead to make the score 7-5 after four innings. The teams traded runs in the fifth inning before Princeton pulled away late with two runs in the seventh and one in the ninth. In the seventh, both Prince and Iacono doubled home runs, while in the ninth, Beckman scored on an Iacono single.
Three Princeton pitchers combined for the win. Senior Michael Zaret allowed three runs in the first three innings, freshman David Hale allowed three runs in the middle three innings and sophomore Brad Gemberling held Elon hitless over the final three innings. Hale was credited with the win and Germberling earned a save.
Princeton returns to action next Friday night at Houston.
