Lightweight Women Race Well In Season Opener vs. Bucknell Open Women
April 01, 2007 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
The Princeton women's lightweight crew, coming off its strongest fall performance in years, began its 2007 spring with solid racing against the Bucknell open program. The Bison, which didn't have a lightweight crew to bring to Lake Carnegie Sunday, took the varsity races, while Princeton picked up a strong win in the novice competition.
"Overall I think we were a bit race-rusty," head coach Paul Rassam said afterwards. "Having said that, I was happy with the technical effort that the 1V made. Now we need to focus on building greater speed endurance and I think our boat will make great strides over the next few weeks. Bucknell's openweights showed why they are ranked first in the Patriot League and have gone undefeated thus far in the spring season. They are a solid crew and they seemed a bit more prepared to race today than we were. Our 2V8 had a great race with Bucknell's 2V. It was a very solid effort and a tremendous way to start out the year."
The first varsity finished in 7:17.9, while Bucknell won the race in 7:07.0, and the second varsity came in at 7:22.6. The novice eight posted a winning time of 7:26.0.
Princeton will compete against the up-and-coming women's lightweight programs at MIT and Central Florida next Saturday.
