April 14, 2007 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- The Princeton baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games on Saturday in a doubleheader with Columbia at Clarke Field. Princeton rallied late to close the gap in a 6-5 loss in Game 1, while Columbia scored late to win the nightcap 3-2. Sunday's doubleheader between the two teams has been postponed.
Game 1
In the opening game, the Lions jumped out to a big lead early with four runs in the opening inning. A leadoff walk put a runner on for Ron Williams homered to left field to put Columbia ahead 2-0. A single followed that before Jake Summerhays setting up Jake Sumemrhays, who also homoered to left field.
Princeton chipped two runs off the lead in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Greg Van Horn led off the Tiger half of the inning with a solon homer. A walk to senior Aaron Prince followed, and he went to second and third on groundouts before scoring on freshman Jack Murphy's single.
Columbia added runs in the third and fourth innings to go ahead 6-2, before Princeton made a game of it in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Dan DeGeorge and Van Horn hit back-to-back doubles to left center to make the score 6-3. Columbia starter Bill Purdy was able to get the next two outs, but gave up two additional runs on senior Sal Iacono hit his third home run of the season to left field to clear the bases and make the score 6-5, which was the final.
Purdy allowed five runs on nine hits for the win, while Princeton junior starter Steven Miller took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits in five innings. Freshman Langford Stuber added two hitless innings of relief.
Game 2
Princeton had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the nightcap, but Columbia scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to come from behind and take a 3-2 win. Lion starter John Baumann limited the Tigers to just two hits over nine innings for the win.
Princeton opened the scoring in the third inning when DeGeorge reached on an error, went to second on a sac bunt, and scored on Van Horn's single. Columbia evened the score in its next at bat on a Craig Rodwogin RBI-double, but the Tigers promptly regained the lead when senior Aaron Prince hit a solo homer in the fourth inning, his second in the last three games.
Princeton held the 2-1 lead into the seventh when Columbia added a run to even the score. A single up the middle, a balk and an infield single put runners on the corners, and the tying run came on a sac fly to right field.
Columbia then took the lead an inning later when Summerhays reached on an error. Thomas Stevens came on to pinch run and went to second on a sac bunt. He then scored from second on Dean Forthun's single.
Princeton put one on in the bottom of the ninth looking to even up the game, but could not push the runner across and Columbia took the win.
Baumann allowed two hits over nine innings for the win, while Princeton junior starter Christian Staehely allowed two earned runs through eight innings. Sophomore Brad Gemberling pitched the ninth.

Princeton fell to 8-18 overall and 4-6 in the Ivy League with the sweep, while Columbia is now 12-19-1 overall and 7-7 in the league.
