Princeton Takes Two From Columbia
April 18, 2007 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- The Princeton baseball team doubled its way to an 11-5 win in the opener and used a walk-off single in the second game to sweep Columbia in an Ivy League doubleheader on Wednesday at Clarke Field. Sophomore Adrian Turnham had five hits on the day, including the game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth of the second game.
Game 1
The first game was marked by the eight doubles the Tigers hit, which set a new single game mark for the Tigers, besting the previous high of seven by a game. Three of those doubles came from freshman Brian Berkowitz, who tied a Princeton record with three doubles in a game.
Columbia jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an unearned run and held the lead until the Tigers plated five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a lead it would hold throughout the game. With one out, Berkowitz doubled to left center and went to third on a wild pitch before junior Micah Kaplan walked. Sophomore Dan DeGeorge then doubled to plate Berkowitz, and moved Kaplan to third, who then scored on freshman Greg Van Horn's sac fly. Senior Aaron Prince then walked. He went to third by stealing second and taking third on an error, before scoring when senior Sal Iacono homered to left field, his fourth home run of the season.
Playing with a 5-1 lead, the Tigers added a run in the third inning when Turnham and Berkowitz hit consecutive doubles. Columbia closed the gap in the fifth inning when Mike Roberts hit a two-run homer, and got another two-run homer an inning later from Thomas Stevens.
Princeton also scored runs in both the fifth and six innings, pushing three runs across in the fifth and two more in the sixth. In the fifth, freshman Jack Murphy doubled and later scored on a groundout. Berkowitz, Kaplan and DeGeorge then strung together three-straight doubles to push two more runs across the plate.
An inning later, Prince singled and Iacono walked, with both runners scoring on a Turnham single.
Freshman David Hale improved to 2-2 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. Henry Perkins took the loss for Columbia, allowing six runs in four innings.
Game 2
Princeton never trailed in the nightcap but had to win its final at bat after Columbia evened the score in the top of the ninth inning. The Tigers went ahead 2-0 after two innings thanks to solo homers in both innings. In the first, Prince hit a solo homer to right field, his fourth of the year, and an inning later, sophomore Andrew Doupe, hit one to the same spot for his second homer.
Columbia chipped a run off the Tiger lead in the fourth when a run scored on an error. Princeton pushed the lead out to 4-1 in the sixth inning. With an out, Turnham and Berkowitz hit successive singles. Doupe then singled to drive in Turnham, and sophomore Derek Beckman, who pinch ran for Berkowtiz, scored on a DeGeorge single.
Columbia scored two more unearned runs in the seventh to make it a one-run game again. The Lions then evened the score in the top of the ninth when Jason Banos hit a one-out double. Princeton got the next out, but Ron Williams hit a two-out double off the wall to plate the tying run.
The game went to the bottom of the ninth tied at four. Iacono led off the inning by doubling over the third baseman's head, and was able to score the game-winning run when Turnham singled through the right side.
Senior Eric Walz pitched seven innings and allowed three runs, all unearned. Junior Steven Miller got the win in relief. John Baumann took the loss for Columbia.
