Men's Heavyweights Look to Hold on to Compton Cup
April 20, 2007 | Heavyweight Rowing
Princeton's strong rowing tradition and reputation is once again proven
this season, as the women's lightweights share the top spot with
Wisconsin in the latest USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association
Division I Varsity Eight poll. The Tigers will look to keep that top
spot with another exceptional effort at Georgetown on Saturday.
Princeton swept the Hoyas on Lake Carnegie last year, including a
5.3-second win in the varsity eight race.
Princeton swept all
three races it rowed in last weekend at the Windermere Crew Classic in
Redwood Shores, Calif. The Orange and Black beat Central Florida for a
second time this season in the opening race, and completed a perfect
first day with a 20-second win over Loyola. The squad also pulled out a
tight race over host Stanford, as it won by three seconds in Sunday's
race. Georgetown's lightweight eight raced in the Knecht Cup last
weekend. The Hoyas placed second, 11 seconds behind Wisconsin.
The
seventh-ranked women's open crew returns home to the friendly waters of
Lake Carnegie to race for the Class of 1984 Trophy on Saturday. The
Orange and Black hosts Penn, Dartmouth and Bucknell, looking to keep
its stranglehold on the trophy. Princeton has won the trophy every year
since the trophy started in 1985, including last year's dominating
effort in which the Tigers out-rowed second-place Dartmouth by 19
seconds in the varsity eight race. The second varsity and novices races
count toward trophy standings as well, and Princeton easily won those
races last year.
Last week, the Tigers dropped an extremely
tight race to fourth-ranked Yale, finishing just 1.7 seconds behind the
Bulldogs. Dartmouth is coming off of a four-race sweep of the
University of Massachusetts, while Penn swept Rutgers and Cornell last
weekend and Bucknell swept William Smith.
The men's heavyweight
squad, also ranked seventh in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll,
returns home on Saturday to host No. 3 Harvard and MIT in the annual
Compton Cup regatta. The Compton Cup is currently in Tiger possession,
as Princeton posted a four-second win over the Crimson last year to win
the Cup for the first time since 2001, and for the first time on the
Charles River since 1957.
Princeton currently stands at 3-0
after a sweep of Columbia and Penn last weekend. The Tigers rowed in
6:07.38 to hold on to the historic Childs Cup for the 14th consecutive
season. Both opponents are coming off of wins in their respective
regattas last weekend as well.
Princeton's men's lightweights
also garnered attention in the polls, as the varsity eight ranks third and the Class of 2010 tops the novice poll.
The Tigers look to bounce back after falling to defending national champion
Cornell in Ithaca last Saturday. They will head down to
Philadelphia on Saturday for the Wood-Hammond Trophy race against Penn
and Georgetown. Princeton dominated all three races to take home the
trophy last year. The Tigers outlasted Penn by 5.5 seconds to finish in
6:09.7, while the 3V and 2V boats went 1-2 in their race. Penn is
coming off of a third-place finish behind Columbia and Yale, while
Georgetown split its two dual races last Saturday by winning at Navy
before falling to Yale by three seconds.
