Women's Water Polo Places Second at Southerns

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The 16th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team placed second at the Southern Championships after falling to host Maryland 9-8 on Saturday evening. Princeton reached the championship game by defeating George Washington 11-2 early in the day.
Maryland, which had fallen to Princeton in the four previous meetings between the two this season, got the win when Elizabeth Hopkins scored with two seconds remaining in regulation. The goal snapped an 8-8 deadlock. Princeton led the game 6-5 after three quarters, but was unable to hold off Maryland.

The Tigers reached the final by defeating George Washington 11-2 this morning. Princeton controlled the game from the onset, defeating George Washington 11-2 in the semifinals. Princeton jumped out a 4-0 lead in the opening quarter and extended that lead to 7-0 at the half. The Colonials got on the scoreboard with goals in the third and fourth periods, but Princeton continued to pull away for the lopsided win.
Princeton senior Karina Reyner, the reigning CWPA Southern Player of the Week, was one of two Princeton players to score three goals in the game, as both she and freshman Lauren Sabb had three scores. Sophomore Claire Jacobson scored twice and three others added single goals. Junior Natalie Kim made nine saves to help lead Princeton into the Southern Championship game against Maryland.

Princeton will return to action next weekend at the CWPA Eastern Championships at DeNunzio Pool. The Tigers clinched an Eastern berth with their morning win over GW. The tournament begins next Saturday and the seedings will be released on Monday.
