Wins Over Maryland and Michigan Put Women?s Water Polo Team in Eastern Title Game

PRINCETON -- The 18th-ranked Princeton women's water polo used an 11-7 win over Maryland and a 4-3 win over 19th-ranked Michigan to advance to the 2007 Eastern Championship game on Sunday against Hartwick.
In the Tigers' first game of the day, junior goalie Natalie Kim made 13 saves to lead the Tigers to an 11-7 win. The Tigers got 10 of the their 11 goals in the game from seniors, as both Samantha Shaugnessy and Karina Reyner scored three goals apiece. Classmates Jazmin Brown and Elyse Colgan both scored twice in the game as well, while freshman Helen Meigs added the final Tiger score. Reyner also drew four ejections in the game while Meigs and classmate Phoebe Champion both doled out two assists.
Princeton avenged a loss to Maryland in last weekend's Southern Championship game with the win. Princeton is now 5-1 this season against Maryland. Princeton led the game for all but 3:11 seconds of the game as the Tigers opened the scoring with 4:49 left in the first period as Colgan, the four-time Southern Division Player of the Year, found the back of the cage.
The lead climbed to 3-0 before the Terrapins responded as Shaughnessy scored at 3:03 and Reyner finished a pass from Champion at 2:34. Maryland trimmed the margin back to a pair of goals before the end of the period as Blaise Stanicic threaded a pass to Rachel Jordan with 57 seconds remaining on the clock for an exclusion goal.
The margin went back to a goal 12 seconds into the second period as Shannon Simerly scored to pull Maryland to within 3-2, but Meigs finished a pass from Colgan at 5:43 and dished a pass to Shaughnessy for an exclusion score at 5:10 to push the lead out to 5-2.
Maryland answered to pull back to within a goal as Laurel Laidlaw assisted Stanicic for an exclusion goal at 3:52, but Princeton counterd the Terrapins' offense again as Colgan put back a rebound for a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Princeton sealed the win in the third through fourth period as the Tigers scored four goals, including a pair of goals by Brown at 5:10 and 2:36 of the third period, but jump out to a 10-3 lead. Reyner scored at 6:34 of the third period and assisted Shaughnessy at 5:46 of the fourth period to complete the four-goal run.
Princeton added an insurance goal at 3:21 with an exclusion goal by Reyner off a pass from Meigs and Maryland tacked on another goal at 1:20 as Hopkins rebounded a missed penalty shot for the 11-7 final.

Princeton then faced Michigan in the title game and used two goals from Reyner and nine saves from Kim, including two breakaways, as the Tigers held off Michigan 4-3 to advance to a title game showdown with 2006 Eastern Champion Hartwick.
The Tigers will make their third Eastern title game appearance, and first since 1991 as the team is 1-1 in their previous title tilt attempts falling 11-10 in sudden death overtime to Brown in 2001 and defeating Massachusetts in 2000.
Michigan jumped out to an early lead in the game as the Wolverines' Shana Welch found the back of the cage at 4:18 of the first period, but the Tigers clawed their way back to tie the game as Colgan scored at the 2:19 mark.
Princeton took the lead 57 seconds later as Meigs beat Michigan goalie Kristen Davis for an advantage score at 1:22 as the Tigers carried a 2-1 lead into the second period.
The lead lasted 1:48 as Welch scored on a direct shot at 7:34 of the second period to knot the game at 2-2.
Reyner broke the tie with 5:03 left in the first half with an advantage goal before tallying the eventual game-winner at 3:06 of the fourth period for a 4-2 Princeton lead.
Michigan attempted to rally as Julie Hyrne beat Kim with 1:08 left in the fourth period to pull the Wolverines to within 4-3.
With 30 seconds left on the clock, Michigan called a timeout with possession of the ball, but couldn't find the back of the net as Princeton survived to advance to the title game against Hartwick.
Game time for the final is set for 1:30 p.m. with the victor receiving the CWPA's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship field.
