PRINCETON -- The 16th-ranked Princeton women's water polo team hosts the 2007 CWPA Eastern Championships this weekend at DeNunzio Pool with the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line to the tournament's winner. Princeton, the third seed, will open the tournament Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Maryland.

Princeton enters the weekend following a second-place finish last weekend at the Southern Championships, as the Tigers were defeated in the final seconds by Maryland in the championship game. Princeton breezed by George Washington in the opening round. Despite the loss however, Princeton still received the third seed for Easterns by virtue of its 6-0 regular season league record and its four previous wins over Maryland this season.
Freshman Lauren Sabb paced the Tigers at Southerns by scoring seven of Princeton's 19 goals. She now has 41 for the year and ranks third on the Tigers in scoring behind seniors Elyse Colgan and Karina Reyner. Both joined Sabb in scoring in both games at Southerns with Colgan scoring six and Reyner adding four. Junior goalkeeper Natalie Kim averaged 11 saves between the two contests. Princeton opened the two-game tournament with an 11-2 win over GW, before falling 9-8 to Maryland.
Princeton, Maryland and Bucknell advanced to Easterns from Southerns and are joined by Hartwick, Brown and Harvard from Northerns, and Michigan and Indiana from Westerns. Bucknell and Maryland received the at-large bids to the tournament.
Princeton faced six of the seven schools at Easterns during the regular season, playing every team with the exception of Harvard. Princeton went a collective 8-3 against the teams, posting a 4-1 record against Maryland, a 2-0 record against Bucknell and winning its lone game against both Brown and Indiana. Princeton was 0-1 against Hartwick and Michigan.
Princeton will open Easterns on Saturday afternoon with the final game of the first session, taking on a familiar foe in sixth-seeded Maryland. The teams have already met five times in 2007, including a week ago in the Southern title game. Saturday's game will be their 10th meeting in the last two seasons. Princeton is 7-2 in the previous nine between the teams.
Should Princeton advance, its next opponent would be the winner of the game between second-seeded Michigan and seventh-seeded Bucknell. The other two opening round games have top-seed Hartwick facing eighth-seed Harvard and fourth-seeded Brown facing fifth-seeded Hartwick. For a complete schedule of the tournament, click here.
Princeton is looking for its first Eastern title since 2000. The Tigers placed third at Easterns last season after falling to Michigan in the semifinals and winning the third-place game by edging Bucknell. Princeton placed fourth the previous three seasons.
