Women's 4X800 Group Wins College Section at Penn Relays
April 28, 2007 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Princeton track teams finished the Penn Relays with a race winner Saturday when the women's 4X800 relay team won the "college" section of that event over a field of 22 teams in two heats.
Liz Bergold, Christy Johnson, Catha Mullen and Liz Costello won by nearly four seconds both in their heat and overall in a time of 8:48.09 for the eight combined laps around the Franklin Field track. That time was better than three teams that competed in the "Championship of America" 4X800 relay just prior to Princeton's event.
The Princeton men also entered a team in the 4X800 "college" section, and that team finished an outstanding 11th out of 33 teams competing in two heats. Collin Plummer, Mike Kowal, Jordan Hill and Jeff Carbonella finished their race in a time of 7:42.12, less than 10 seconds behind the winning time.
The Tiger men also had competitors in both the hammer throw and javelin competitions on the final day of Penn Relay Saturday. Alex Pessala competed in the "championship" section of the hammer, where his best throw was 185 feet, eight inches. Matt McNamara competed in the "college" section in the hammer and had a toss of 164 feet, three inches.
Mark Paski, also an offensive lineman on Princeton's 2006 Ivy champion football team, competed in the "college" section of the javelin on Saturday and had a throw of 164 feet, five inches.
