Princeton Splits a Pair of Games With Dartmouth
April 08, 2007 | Baseball
PRINCETON -- The Princeton baseball team split a pair of games with Dartmouth on Sunday at Clarke Field. The Tigers dropped the opener 2-1 before taking the nightcap 12-4. Senior Eric Walz took the win in Game 2, while senior Sal Iacono and sophomore Adrian Turnham both drove in three runs.
Game 1
The first game of the day proved to be a pitching battle between Princeton freshman David Hale and Dartmouth's Russell Young. Both pitched complete games and allowed one earned run, but Dartmouth was able to push across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh for the 2-1 win.
The Big Green took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Jason McManis singled to begin the inning and after stealing second, went to third on a sac bunt. He then scored when James Wren singled up the middle. The lead lasted until the top of the sixth when Princeton evened the score at 1-1. With two outs, senior Aaron Prince doubled to right center and scored when sophomore Dan DeGeorge's infield single trickled by Dartmouth's shortstop.
The game went to the seventh inning tied at 1-1 when Dartmouth came away with the walk-off win. Brett Gardner was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Kyle Evans the hit a fielder's choice, but an error allowed everyone to be safe. With two on base, Dartmouth won the game when McManis singled through the left side.
Young scattered five hits and a run in seven innings for the win, while Hale took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits in six-plus innings.
Game 2
Princeton bounced back from the Game 1 loss to take a 12-4 win in the nightcap. Princeton plated 12 runs on 17 hits in the game as all but one Tiger player recorded a hit in the game. Iacono and sophomore Adrian Turnham both had three hits in the game and four Tigers had two hits apiece.
After Dartmouth went ahead 1-0 with a run in the first inning, Princeton evened things with a run in the second innings on the strength of consecutive doubles. First Turnham reached on a double over the head of the right fielder, then freshman Brian Berkowitz doubled to right center to drive in Turnham.
Princeton went ahead for good in the third inning with two more runs as part of a two-out rally. Lucian singled with two outs and went to third when Iacono dropped in a single in shallow right field. Both runners were then able to score when freshman Jack Murphy hit a double that landed on the warning track in right center, giving Princeton a 3-1 edge.
Princeton then made it 8-1 with five runs in the fifth inning. Lucian started the inning with a single and scored on an Iacono double. A Turnham single then scored Iacono for the second run of the inning. Singles by Berkowitz and junior Micah Kaplan loaded the bases and three more runs scored on a DeGeorge single, a hit by pitch and a walk.
Princeton completed its scoring in the seventh inning with four more runs. DeGeorge walked with an out and came around to score on a double from freshman Greg Van Horn. A Lucian walk put two on for Iacono, who doubled in the second run of the inning. The next run scored on an error and Turnham drove in the final run of the inning.
Dartmouth closed the gap late with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth but could get no closer as Princeton pulled off the 12-4 win.
Walz pitched 6.2 innings and scattered three runs on six hits. He also struck out eight batters. Freshman Jon Broscious pitched the final 2.1 innings and gave up a run on three hits. Chase Carpenter took the loss for Dartmouth allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings.

Princeton is now 8-15 overall and 4-4 in the Ivy League. The Tigers gained a game on Cornell, the first-place team in the Gehrig Division, which was swept at Harvard and is now 5-3 in the league. Sunday's doubleheaders between Penn and Brown, and Columbia and Yale were postponed and will be played on Monday.
