Defending NCAA Gold Medalists Earn Individual Honors, Prepare For 2007 Rowing Championships
May 24, 2007 | Women's Rowing - Open
The Princeton open crew is currently in Oak Ridge, Tenn., preparing for the 2007 NCAA Championships. As members of the ninth-ranked Princeton squad received individual honors from the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA), the NCAA announced Friday's heats for the three-day championships.
Princeton will begin racing Friday morning at 8:15 a.m. in the second heat of the varsity eights. Racing on Melton Hill Lake, Princeton will be in lane one and take on (from lanes 2-6) Notre Dame, Yale, Stanford, Dartmouth and Tennessee. The top three finishers in the heat will automatically move to one of Saturday's semifinals (8 and 8:15 a.m.), while the rest will move to Friday's 1 p.m. repechage, where a top-three finish will be necessary to advance to Saturday.
The second varsity eights will compete in its first heat at 9:45 a.m. Lane assignments from one through six will be Washington, Princeton, California, Virginia, Harvard and Southern California. The varsity four will compete in the second heat at 11 a.m., with lane assignments going to California, Brown, Yale, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Princeton. In both the second varsity and varsity four events, the winners from each of Friday's heats will move immediately into Sunday's finals, while the rest of the field will compete Saturday for the remaining spots in the finals.
Princeton, which routed the field last season in winning the varsity eight gold medal, will feature four all-region selections, including a trio of first-team picks. Seniors Carrie Kruse, Gevvie Stone and junior Kristin Haraldsdottir were named first-team all-region by the CRCA, while senior Danielle Villoch earned second-team honors.
The CRCA also announced its top scholar-athletes from the 2007 season, and Princeton took home eight honors from this group: Margaret Arbuthnot, Marcelline Baumann, Abigail Chambers, Elizabeth Cody, Luca Nagy, Sara Piaskowy, Savannah Sachs and Carolyn Wood.
