Men's Track Finishes Second At Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Championships
May 06, 2007 | Men's Track and Field
The Princeton men's track team could not make up its deficit on the final day of the 2007 Ivy League Heptagonal Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Weaver Stadium, but the Tigers' second-place finish was not without a host of highlight performances.
Included in those performances was a victory for Justin Frick in the high jump, one of 15 finals contested on Sunday. Frick and Cornell's David Pell each cleared 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10 3/4 inches), but Frick earned the 10 points for Princeton by clearing five heights without a miss.
Princeton finished with 133 points in the two-day meet, well ahead of third-place Yale. Cornell won the meet with 180 points. The Tigers had three top-two finishes in Heptagonal events this season after winning the championship at the cross country meet in October and the indoor meet in February.
There were also a threesome of dual-event standouts for Princeton on Sunday. In the sprints, sophomore Shafiq Kashmiri finished third in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes, while in the distance events, David Nightingale finished fourth in a strong field in the 1,500 before coming back less than three hours later to finish a strong second in the 5,000.
After finishing fourth in the long jump competition on Saturday, Nathan Crumpton earned points in a second event Sunday when he finished third in the triple jump. Crumpton's best mark was 15.10 meters (49 feet, 6 1/2 inches) in his second of six attempts.
Kashmiri's times were 10.67 seconds in the 100 and 21.67 in the 200 on a windy Sunday at Princeton's home track. Nightingale ran a 3:49.65 in the 1,500 in a field featuring several of the country's top milers and then dualed for the win late in the 5,000 before settling for second in a time of 14:17.25.
Senior Rich Stewart was a silver medalist for the Tigers in the 400 meters, finishing the race in a time of 48.12 seconds.
Although first-day leader Duane Hynes did not complete the decathlon after not clearing a height in the pole vault, teammate and Princeton junior Will Byrd had a good second day to finish third overall in the event, including an event-best 15-11 in the pole vault and the second best time of the seven competitors in the closing 1,500 meters (4:38.36).
In the relays, Princeton's 4X100 group of Alex Julie, Brian Shields, Ray Simnick and Kashmiri was a tight third in 41.24 seconds, while Shields joined Ian Thomson, Brian Li-A-Ping and Stewart to help the 4X400 group to a fourth-place finish in the meet's final event.
Thomson, in sixth, and fourth-place finisher Tom Zozokos also gave the Tigers two scorers in the 400 hurdles, while Chris Vasich ran a 14.53 to finish fifth in the 110 high hurdles.
James O'Toole finished right behind Nightingale in 3:51 to finish fifth in the 1,500, giving the Tigers two scorers in that race, while Frank Tinney finished in third behind Nightingale in the 5,000 in a time of 14:27.36.
