Tigers Compete at Field Hockey National Championships
June 25, 2007 | Field Hockey
A group of six Princeton field hockey players comprised of two current Tigers and four alumni competed last week at the USA Field Hockey National Championships in Virginia Beach. Five of the players competed for the Pennsylvania/New Jersey team, which took top honors in the tournament.
The Pennsylvania/New Jersey team, which was coached by Princeton head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn, went 5-0 in round-robin play, before defeating the Midwest team in the final. The team dominated the event, outscoring its opponents 31-7 over six games. It was the only one of the six squads that had a positive goal differential. Players on the team with Princeton connections included two current Tigers Candice Arner and Kaitlyn Perrelle; and three Princeton field hockey alums were also on the PA/NJ team: Maren Ford '06, Natalie Martirosian '05 and Allison Nemeth
'07.
Arner will return to the Tiger lineup in 2007 as a junior after missing the entire 2006 season due to an injury suffered in the preseason. Perrelle will enter her sophomore season in 2007 and was the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year in the fall. Ford served as an assistant coach with the Tigers last season and was a three-time All-Ivy selection at Princeton. Martirosian was a three-time First-Team All-Ivy choice and ranks fifth on Princeton's all-time assists list. Nemeth finished up her college career last fall as a first-team All-Ivy goalkeeper.
Lauren Ehrlichman '06, an honorable mention All-Ivy choice as a senior at Princeton, competed on the New England team.
Conducted under the format of an international tournament, the Women's National Championships features squads of current U.S. national team members and top college players. Team members train during the spring at regionally-based training sites with the top players selected to represent their regions at the National Championships.
The Princeton field hockey team finished the 2006 season with a 12-7 overall record, a perfect 7-0 record in Ivy League play and made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament. The Tigers begin their 2007 season on Sun., Sept. 2 when they travel to America. Their first home game is three days later on Wed., Sept. 5 against Penn State.
