Ferrell ?06 Wins Silver Medal in 5,000 Meters at Pan American Games

Former Princeton All-America Cack Ferrell '06 won the silver medal in the women's 5,000 meters Friday at the XV Pan American Games at the Joao Havelange Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
Ferrell led the race at each 1,000-meter split before being overtaken by Canadian and former West Virginia All-America Megan Metcalfe in the final lap. She ran the first 1,000 meters in just more than 3:11 and ran by the 2,000-meter split in 6:20.67. Her 3,000 meter time was 9:31.44, and the final split at 4,000 meters came in 12:41.84.
Her time of 15:42.01 for the 12 1/2 laps was a personal best for the 2006 Princeton graduate and just more than six seconds behind Metcalfe's winning time of 15:35.78. Leticia Rocha de la Cruz of Mexico won the bronze medal in a time of 15:43.80
A Minneapolis native now training in Eugene, Ore., Ferrell was a six-time All-America in cross country and track & field while at Princeton. A winner of the C. Otto von Kienbusch Award as the top senior female student-athlete at Princeton, she also was a two-time Athlete of the Meet at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships and a CoSIDA Academic All-America.
Nearly 6,000 athletes from 42 countries in the Americas participated in the XV Pan Am Games in Rio July 12-29. In addition to Ferrell, Diana Matheson of Princeton's women's soccer team won a bronze medal playing for the Canadian national team.
