Former Princeton baseball/basketball star and San Diego Padres pitcher Chris Young '02 won the National League's portion of the Major League Baseball's Final Vote and will appear in the 2007 MLB All-Star Game next weekend in San Francisco.
Young will become the fourth Princetonian to appear in all-star game in one of the big-four sports. Bill Bradley appeared in the 1972-73 NBA All-Star Game. Geoff Petrie played in the 1971 and 1974 NBA All-Star Games and Brian Taylor competed in the 1975 and 1976 ABA All-Star games.
Young was named to his first All-Star game as he garnered more than 4.5 million votes in the fan balloting. The 6-10 pitcher is 8-3 and has a 2.00 ERA in 17 games this season and his team is 12-5 when he starts.
He currently leads the National League in opponent batting average and earned runs average. Both numbers dropped yesterday when he pitched seven scoreless innings against the Florida Marlins. Young has not lost since May 12 vs. St. Louis.
