Matheson's Team Canada Tops Ghana 4-0 for First 2007 Women's World Cup Win

HANGZHOU, China -- Princeton senior midfielder Diana Matheson was in the Canadian starting lineup again Saturday at the 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup as Canada scored three second-half goals to top Ghana 4-0.
Canada moves to 1-1-0 in pool play with three points. Norway and Australia, the other two teams in the group, tied Saturday, leaving those two squads with four points each. With a win over Australia Wednesday, Canada would qualify for the knockout stage.
Matheson played 84 minutes against Ghana before being substituted after Canada gained the four-goal lead. Christine Sinclair had the first of her two goals in the 16th minute to give Canada a 1-0 advantage into the break. Sophie Schmidt doubled that edge in the 55th minute before Sinclair pushed it to 3-0 seven minutes later. Martina Franko scored Canada's final goal in the 77th minute.
Back stateside, Princeton scored its first two goals of the season Friday night against Notre Dame, but the defending national runners-up won the game 4-2. Princeton will look for its first win Sunday again at Notre Dame against Washington State at 11 a.m.
