Three Tigers Reach Semifinals In Singles Brackets at UVa Fall Invitational
September 17, 2007 | Men's Tennis
Three Princeton singles players reached the semifinals of their respective brackets, including No. 3 seeds Peter Capkovic and George Carpeni, as the Tigers began their fall men's tennis season at the UVA Fall Invitational this past weekend.
Playing in the "yellow" bracket, Capkovic defeated VCU's Emil Lindgren 6-2 and 6-4 in the first round before disposing of Wake Forest's Steve Forman by scores of 6-4 and 6-4 in the quarterfinals. He then lost a tough three-setter to No. 2 seed Martin Sayer of Radford, the No. 26 player nationally in the preseason, in the semifinals. Scores were 4-6, 6-3 and 6-4.
Carpeni was the No. 3 seed in the "white" bracket and won Friday matches against Denver's Niklas Persson and Harvard's Will Guzick, both in straight sets, to advance to the Saturday's semis. He would fall to Penn State's Eddie Bourchier in that match by scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
Junior Alex Vuckovic was a semifinalist in the "orange" 16-player bracket, nearly making the final before falling in a third-set tiebreaker to Penn State's Ivan Salec in the semifinal match. He had earlier defeated Denver's Ravjot Dhatt and Penn State's Jamie Cox to make it to the final four of that bracket.
Princeton also had two doubles teams compete on Saturday. In the A-2 bracket, Capkovic and Vuckovic played the No. 11 team in the nation, William & Mary's Keziel Juneau and Alex Cojanu, and gave that team a tough battle before falling 8-5. In the B-2 bracket, Carpeni and junior Alex Krueger-Wyman fell to Casey Cullen and R.K. Bacalla of Western Michigan 8-6 in the first round.
Krueger-Wyman also played in the "green" singles bracket, where he defeated Duke's Alain Michel 7-6 in the third set in the first round before losing a heartbreaker to Boise State's Paul Koenke in the quarterfinals in match that went to three tiebreakers.
The Tigers will host the annual Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational this weekend at the Lenz Tennis Center.
