Men's Water Polo Begins 2007 Season on Friday
September 05, 2007 | Men's Water Polo
The Princeton men's water polo team begins its 2007 season this weekend as it hosts its annual Princeton Invitational at DeNunzio Pool from Friday to Sunday. Princeton will play five games in the tournament with its season opener coming Friday night at 7 p.m. against Fordham.
All five of Princeton's games during the tournament will be video streamed live in TigerZone, along with Princeton's six other scheduled home games.
Princeton, ranked 15th in this weeks national poll, will again be in contention for the CWPA's Southern and Eastern titles in 2007, but will have to rely on several players to step up and fill new roles on the team. Princeton graduated nine players and has three players sitting out the 2007 season with plans to return in 2008. This has hurt the Tigers depth this season, but Princeton has plenty of able and willing players ready to step up.
Princeton's schedule mainly consists of tournaments and its league schedule. The Tigers open with five games this weekend, highlighted by a Sunday game against 17th-ranked Santa Clara. Princeton then plays four league games over the next two weeks before the ECAC Championships at Bucknell. The remainder of the Tigers schedule features a trip to California for the SoCal Tournament at UC Irvine in mid-October and the Southern and Eastern Championships in November.
Last season the Tigers went 18-8 overall and were 6-2 in the Southern Division to place second. Princeton advanced to both the Southern and Eastern championship games, but both times was edged by Navy. In fact, five of Princeton's eight losses last season came to Navy, a number the Tigers hope to turn around in 2007.
The 2007 Princeton roster boasts just three seniors, including starting goalkeeper Scott Syverson and the Tigers' second leading returning scorer, Zach Beckmann. The third member of the class is Jason Diggs, who appeared in 15 games as a role player last season but is expected to see his playing time increase this season.
Junior Brendan Colgan is Princeton's leading returning scorer, after finding the cage 29 times last season. Beckman scored 22 goals, and sophomore Mark Zalewski, a 21 goal scorer last season, give the Tigers three returning 20-goal scorers. Junior Alex Edmunds and sophomores Gregor Horstmeyer and Matt Hudnall also made important contributions to the 2006 team and will be looked upon to step up their play in the upcoming season.
Syverson saw the bulk of the time in goal last season, posting a 16-8 record and making 181 saves. Sophomore Scott Hvidt and Henry Fyfe saw limited action, and the trio will be joined by freshman Mike Merlone this season.
In addition to the 13 returning players, the Tigers will add five freshmen to their roster in 2007. The group is expected to contribute from Day 1.
