The Princeton women's hockey returns to action following a 27-day layoff over the holidays this weekend when it visits ninth-ranked Connecticut for a two-game series. Princeton last played on Dec. 7-8 when it swept a series at Union and Rensselaer.
Princeton is midway through its season and sits right at .500 both overall and in the league. The Tigers began the season with a three-game unbeaten streak, but three straight losses sent Princeton under .500. The Tigers have gone 6-4-1 since and their sweep of Union and Rensselaer moved the team to 7-7-2 overall and 5-5-1 in league play.
Princeton did not allow a goal in the sweep of Union and Rensselaer as junior goaltender Kristen Young stopped all 21 shots she faced that weekend. Twelve Princeton skaters had points on the weekend as freshman Laura Martindale, freshman Sasha Sherry, sophomore Melanie Wallace and senior Brittany Salmon each had points in both games. Senior Marykate Oakley, sophomore Maddie Endicott and freshman Caroline Park each recorded multiple-point games.
Oakley continues to lead Princeton in scoring with 17 points in 16 games. She ranks second with six goals and 11 assists, but leads in total points. The senior has 84 points in her career and 16 away from the century mark. Sherry sits two points behind her with 15 points to lead the team's freshmen and defensemen in scoring. Her 15 points leads all league defensemen in scoring and ranks third among freshman. Sherry also is fourth in the nation in scoring among all defensemen. Junior Annie Greenwood leads Princeton with seven goals and has 12 points, while Salmon's 11 points ranks her fourth on the team. Senior Lizzie Keady, with eight points, rounds out the top five.
Keady and Sherry were two of three Princeton players that skated as the U.S. Women's Hockey Holiday Camp in Lake Placid over the break. They were joined there by junior Katherine Dineen.
Princeton faces a UConn team this weekend that played last weekend in the Nutmeg Tournament. The Huskies are 13-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Hockey East following wins last weekend over ECAC opponents Quinnipiac and Yale. The two wins snapped a three-game winless streak for UConn, which was its longest of the season.
Princeton and Connecticut have met on seven prior occasions with Princeton winning all seven meetings, including 3-1 and 2-0 wins in the 2004-05 season when this year's seniors were freshmen. Keady had assists in both games; while Salmon added an assist in the shutout win. Princeton last played at UConn one season earlier, winning by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
The Tigers return home next weekend to host Yale and Brown before another long layoff, this one for final exams, before returning to action on Jan. 29 at Quinnipiac.
