WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Monmouth powered out of the halftime break and quickly put the Princeton women's basketball team in a double-digit hole Wednesday night at Boylan Gym, dropping the Tigers 91-65.
The loss extends Princeton's skid to six games while dropping the team's record to 3-12. Monmouth won for the second time this season, improving its record to 2-9.
Meagan Cowher led Princeton with 20 points, lifting her career scoring total to 1,412, still in fourth place on the all-time school list.
Monmouth outshot Princeton 50 percent (31 of 62) to 37.7 percent (23 of 61) while outrebounding the Tigers 50 to 30. Jennifer Bender led the Hawks with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Veronica Randolph added 15 points.
Princeton trailed by just five at the break, but Monmouth went on a 17-4 run to start the second half that put the Tigers in an 18-point hole. The Orange and Black wasn't able to put together a run, falling behind by as much as 29 at 76-47 with six minutes left.
Princeton led by two with 8:40 to play in the first half on a bucket by Krystal Hill, but the Tigers went dry for more than six minutes following. Meanwhile, the Hawks went on a 10-0 run to take an eight-point lead with 2:41 before halftime and the Tigers weren't able to get closer than five, the halftime margin.
Jessica Berry made her season debut for the Tigers after studying abroad for the fall semester, scoring three points on free throws in 12 minutes of play.
The Tigers will wrap up the pre-conference schedule Saturday afternoon when they host Vanderbilt for a 2 p.m. tip. The Commodores spent the entire season until this week's polls in the top 25, nearly missing becoming the third ranked team to face the Tigers at Jadwin Gym this season.
