Princeton, ECAC Hockey Pairs with American Cancer Society for Pink at the Rink
January 22, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team, along with ECAC Hockey and the American Cancer Society, have teamed up to help fight cancer with the creation of Pink At The Rink. This newly created variation of a traditional Coaches vs. Cancer program will provide critical outreach, while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society's lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community service efforts.
The main premise of the program will have ECAC Hockey women's hockey teams wearing specially designed pink jerseys on consecutive weekend home series - February 8-9 and February 15-16. Princeton will wear pink jerseys when it hosts Harvard on February 15 at 7 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink.
These game-worn jerseys will then be auctioned on-line at a newly created Web site (www.ecachockeycoachesvscancer.com) that is targeted to be launched January 22. The game-worn pink jerseys will be personalized for each institution and showcase ECAC Hockey Coaches vs. Cancer and ECAC Hockey logo patches.
"All of ECAC Hockey is extremely excited about the inaugural Pink At The Rink project," remarked ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell. "With the efforts of our league administrators, coaches, student-athletes, on-ice officials, and fans alike, we are confident of the benefits that will result from the program in supporting a cause that hits to close to home for many of us."
The bidding for all items is slated to begin January 22 and conclude 9 a.m. February 20. A minimum bid of $150 is sought for each player's jersey, with a "Buy It Now" feature on the Web site that allows a potential buyer to own the jersey of his/her choice for a flat price of $250.
Fans will have an opportunity to purchase these jerseys on computer stations in the Baker Rink lobby during the Feb. 15-16 weekend as well. There will also be other promotions and fundraising efforts centered around the game.
In addition to the pink jerseys, both men's and women's coaching staffs will be wearing pink ties and scarves during these two designated weekends. Each head coach will autograph his/her game-worn item, which will then be placed on the new web site as part of the on-line auction process.
Donations to The American Cancer Society will also be accepted at the game. Checks should be made payable to ECAC Hockey/Coaches vs. Cancer.
"The American Cancer Society is happy to have ECAC Hockey join the fight against cancer, commented Anthony Marino, Regional Vice President, American Cancer Society. "The support that our organization has received from the league, its coaches and players has been overwhelming around Coaches vs. Cancer. This supports our efforts throughout the local communities, and for that we are very thankful."
