Tigers Compete At Annual Princeton Relays
January 26, 2008 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Princeton track teams returned home to Jadwin Gym Saturday and had many strong performances at the annual Princeton Relays, with Tiger athletes winning the vast majority of events on both the men's and women's sides after a long break from competition due to first-semester exams.
Men
Impressive Princeton performances on the men's side Saturday included a sub-seven-second 60 meters from sophomore Andrew Usoro, several wins by freshmen athletes both in the field events and on the track and the return of many of the Tigers' top distance runners for strong races in the 1,000 meters and the mile.
There was also the annual Princeton Relays Heptathlon, featuring three athletes from Princeton and three from Penn taking on the seven events, and 2007 NCAA hepathlon qualifier Duane Hynes had the top score on the day for the Tigers with a total of 5,572.
It was a day for Princeton freshmen in the shot put, where George Abyad had the top collegiate throw of 53 feet, 3 inches, in the long jump, where Dion Lehman had the winning mark of 22' 6 1/4", and in the triple jump, where standout newcomer Garner McCloud again surpassed 47 feet.
Princeton's top distance runners, who led the Tigers to a second-straight Heptagonal cross country title back in the fall, split their efforts between the 1,000 meters and the mile on Saturday. In the 1,000, senior David Nightingale led five top Princeton finishers, all of whom completed the five laps within a two-second span. In the mile, Ben Sitler ran an outstanding 4:12 and the Tigers had the top three times overall.
Another Tiger freshman, Mike Eddy, was a winner on the track with a time of 1:05.64 in the 500 meters. Eddy also ran the anchor leg for the mile relay group that won by nearly three seconds in a time of 3:21.29.
Women
A day after being named meet MVP and winning the 1,000 meters at the Great Dane Classic, sophomore Liz Costello ran the 800 meters in under 2:13 to lead Princeton to the top four spots in the event.
On the track, the Tigers also took the top three spots in Saturday's 1,000 meters, with sophomore Alexa Glencer leading the way in 3:03.41, while junior Agatha Offorjebe ran :25.22 to win the 200 meters.
In the field events, just like on the men's side, freshman had winning performances for Princeton. Thanithia Billings won the weight throw with an impressive toss of 53 feet, 5 inches, while Isabell von Loga had the best shot put mark with a throw of 48' 6 1/4". Billings also competed in that event and had a throw of 45' 4/1/2".
Another freshman, Bianca Mathabane, had the best collegiate mark in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.11 seconds.
Princeton also took the top two spots in the 400 meters behind Maria Fasolino and Christine Brozynski, both of whom contributed, along with Offorjebe and Leanne Bellar, to a mile relay team that won that event by more than 10 seconds to conclude the meet.
