Tigers Defeat Dominican, 60-46, In Final Non-Conference Tuneup
January 27, 2008 | Men's Basketball
Princeton used an 11-0 run in the first half to take control and a 13-4 spurt early in the second half to put the game away in a 60-46 men's basketball win over Dominican Sunday afternoon at Jadwin Gym, ending a 12-game losing streak in the process.
Lincoln Gunn had 13 points and Zach Finley had 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks to lead Princeton (3-12), which led 39-21 at halftime and took as much as a 25-point lead six minutes into the second half. The Tigers were ahead just 18-17 midway through the first half but then scored 11 straight points in a three-minute span, the final three coming on a three-pointer by Bobby Foley that made it 29-17.
The Tigers shot 60% (15 for 25) from the field in the first half, including 6 for 12 from three-point range, and limited Dominican (10-9) to 34% shooting for the game.
"I think we worked very hard during the exam break and took care of things we needed to do," said Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson. "The guys have been very resilient. They haven't stopped working hard even though it's obviously been a rough stretch for us. It feels good to win, but now it's time to concentrate on winning our next game."
"We've continued to work hard and our focus has been good," said sophomore guard Marcus Schroeder," who played 28 minutes off the bench and had four assists, no turnovers and four steals. "Now the focus is on winning our next game (Friday against Dartmouth) and then we can worry about the game after that once that one's over."
All 14 players who dressed for Princeton played in the game, and 10 of them scored. The Tigers also outrebounded the Chargers 38-29, with Finley grabbing six of his eight rebounds on the offensive end.
Will Carty led Dominican with 12 points. The Chargers are a member of NCAA Division II and the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).
Princeton still led by 21 points with less than four minutes remaining in the game before substituting liberally. The Tigers shot just 31% from the field in the second half but limited Dominican to just 30% shooting in the last 20 minutes.
Noah Savage had nine points for Princeton, while Pawel Buczak scored six and Nick Lake had five points, four rebounds and three assists in just 16 minutes. Princeton had assists on 19 of its 23 baskets and forced Dominican into 17 turnovers.
The win was the first for Princeton since a Nov. 14 victory against Iona at Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers host Dartmouth and Harvard next weekend as Ivy League play begins. Both the Big Green and Crimson are 1-1 in Ivy play after splitting their home-and-home series earlier this month. The Dartmouth game is Friday at 7:30 p.m.; the Harvard game begins at 6 p.m. Saturday and will be televised by ESPNU.
