The Princeton women's hockey team returns to action following a 17-day layoff for final exams on Tuesday night when it faces travel-partner Quinnipiac. Princeton sits seventh in the ECAC Hockey standings entering the final month of the regular season, looking to climb into a top four playoff spot.
The Tigers sit seventh in the standings in a tie with Cornell at 13 points. The pair is a point behind Yale and two behind Colgate. Dartmouth holds the fourth spot currently with 15 points. Princeton, however, has a game in hand on all the teams, which will be made up when it faces 11th-place Quinnipiac on Tuesday. Following that game, each team has four league weekends left, leading into the playoffs on Feb. 29-March 1.
Princeton sits right at .500 both overall and in the league. The Tigers began the season with a three-game unbeaten streak, but three straight losses sent Princeton under .500. The Tigers have gone 7-5-1 since and a split on Jan. 11-12 with Yale and Brown moved the team to 8-8-2 overall and 6-6-1 in league play.
The Tigers are 3-1-2 in their last six games dating back into December. In its last weekend of action, Princeton lost to Yale 5-3 at home despite a hat trick from junior defenseman Katherine Dineen. A day later, Princeton rebounded with a 2-0 shutout of Brown. Seniors Lizzie Keady and Marykate Oakley scored in the win, while junior goaltender Kristen Young made 17 saves for her fifth shutout of the season. With that performance, four of Princeton's eight wins have been shutouts, and one shutout came in a 0-0 tie.
Princeton faces a Quinnipiac team that is 3-18-4 overall and 0-10-3 in league play. The Bobcats have lost their last six games and have wins over Northeastern and Robert Morris (2) to their credit. Quinnipiac has league ties against Princeton, Colgate and Union.
Princeton and Quinnipiac have met on six prior occasions with Princeton having a 5-0-1 record, including a 1-1 tie on Oct. 21 of this season. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 30-16 in the game, but managed just a goal from junior Annie Greenwood in the second period. Quinnipiac tied the game in the third on the power play and the game ended tied at one.
The Tigers return home following the game to host Union and Rensselaer next weekend.
