Women's Hockey Resumes ECAC Season With 6-2 Road Victory
January 29, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
Sonja Novak scored two goals to lead the Princeton women's hockey team to a 6-2 road win at Quinnipiac in the team's first contest following the exam break. The Tigers, who trailed early before scoring five unanswered goals, are now in a fifth-place tie in the league standings and only two points out of hosting a league quarterfinal series.
Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 36-26 and scored at least one goal in every period to improve its record to 9-8-4, 7-6-1 in the league. Quinnipiac fell to 3-19-4, 0-11-3. The Tigers have 15 points in ECAC play to share fifth with Colgate, while Dartmouth stands two points ahead.
A goal by Breana Burton less than three minutes into play gave Quinnipiac a quick 1-0 lead, but the offensive-minded Tigers shook off any exam rust early enough to take control. Sasha Sherry evened the score at 1 with her third goal of the season off an assist from Brittany Salmon, who would score her seventh goal of the season late in the opening period to give Princeton the lead for good.
Senior Lizzie Keady built the lead to 3-1 16 seconds into the second period, and that would be the only goal in the middle stanza. The Tigers took four penalties during the period, but they fought each one off. Goalie Kristen Young picked up the win with 24 saves, including a game-high 10 in the period.
Keady's power-play goal 10:28 into the third period built the lead to 4-1, and the first of two Sonja Novak goals in the final nine minutes built the advantage to 5-1. Trudy Reyns would score for Quinnipiac, but Novak bounced back with a score 38 seconds later (14:27) to score the final goal in a 6-2 win.
Princeton has eight regular-season games remaining, including two home contests this weekend. The Tigers will host ninth-place Rensselaer Friday at 7 p.m. and 12th-place Union Saturday at 4 p.m. Both games are free of charge and will be played at Baker Rink.
