Tigers Defeat Navy In Men's Indoor Track Dual Meet, 96-85
January 06, 2008 | Men's Track and Field
Princeton used its dominance in the field events to pull away for 96-85 dual-meet victory over Navy at the Jadwin Gym indoor track Sunday afternoon. The Tigers took the top two spots, and eight of the available 11 points, in four of the six field events.
The Tigers also took the top two spots in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes thanks to Andrew Usoro and Shafiq Kashmiri, who each had impressive times in both events. Usoro's 6.95 won the 60, with Kashmiri second in 7.02, while Kashmiri's 22.35 was tops in the 200, just three-hundreths faster than teammate Usoro.
Impressive Princeton performances also included the high jump, where 2007 IC4A champion Justin Frick cleared 6-10 1/4 and Ian Fox 6-8 1/4 to easily outdo their Naval Academy opposition. The weight throw was a similar result for the Tigers, as four-time Heptagonal champion Alex Pessala had a winning toss of more than 61 feet and Craig Pearce also had a nice throw of more than 59 feet, five inches.
Junior multi-event star Duane Hynes was the meet's top long jumper on Sunday with a leap of 23 feet, 2 1/2 inches, while Nathan Crumpton's leap of almost 22 feet, 10 inches gave the Tigers the top two spots in the event.
Four pole vaulters cleared the same 14-9 mark, but Princeton's Chad Faulkner and Will Byrd took the top two spots thanks to their early clearances. A Tiger freshman, Garner McCloud, was the triple jump winner for Princeton with an impressive leap of 47 feet, 3 3/4 inches.
Princeton also won both middle-distance races Sunday. Veteran 800-meter runner Kurt Kuehne took that race, inching out Navy's Craig Meekins by just six-hundreths of a second, while sophomore Ben White was the winner of the 1,000 meters in a time of 2:31.95.
The Tigers participate in a dual meet at Penn State next weekend.
