Hoppenot Leads Men's Soccer to 3-0 Shutout over Rutgers
October 15, 2008 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/15/08) ? The Princeton men's soccer posted a dominating 3-0 shutout over Rutgers on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Roberts Stadium. Freshman Antoine Hoppenot led the attack with two goals and one assist, having a hand in each Tiger goal.
This marks the first time since 2006, that Princeton has won a game by a three-goal margin.
The Tigers didn't take long to get on the scoreboard, with Hoppenot scoring his first goal at 17:52. Sophomore Teddy Schneider centered the ball to classmate Josh Walburn, who then pushed the ball ahead to Hoppenot, who sent a blistering shot into the net.
Princeton head coach Jim Barlow made the decision to start ten of his original 11 starters in the second half and added freshman Manny Sardinha in the mix. Just 1:33 into the second half, Sardinha came up big for the Tigers, giving them a 2-0 lead with his first collegiate goal. Hoppenot got the ball down in the left corner and crossed the ball to junior Devin Muntz on the opposite side of the field. Muntz turned to send the ball back towards the goal, and saw Sardinha open on the doorstep. With one swift kick, Sardinha had given the Tigers its first 2-0 lead of the season.
Hoppenot sealed the win for Princeton at 81:51, when he made a run for the goal with a defending trailing, and rocketed the ball past goalkeeper Amir Haghshenas. Sophomore Brandon Busch was credited with the assist on the goal.
Rutgers had a 16-9 shot advantage over Princeton, but didn't have many legitmate chances to put the ball away. Both of the Scarlet Knights shots on target came in succession during the 52nd minute when Walter came out to stop a Yannick Salmon shot and then stopped the quick rebound by Ibrahim Kamara.
The Princeton defense did a good job of keeping Scarlet Knights from getting anywhere near the scoring zone, with 14 shots being either wide, high or blocked. Arguably one of the Scarlet Knight's best chances was a breakaway that was squashed by Nate Krinsky, who made it look effortless as he stole the ball away in the attacking third and sent it back up the field and into play for the Tigers.
Princeton senior goalkeeper Joe Walter made two saves in his first, and Princeton's first shutout of the season. Haghshenas made one save for Rutgers.
Princeton (3-8-1) travels to Columbia on Saturday, Oct. 18 for an Ivy League match at 7 p.m.
