Men's Water Polo Resumes League Play at Bucknell
October 17, 2008 | Men's Water Polo
The 12th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team resumes its league schedule this weekend when it visits Bucknell on Friday night and takes on George Washington on Saturday. The Tigers have climbed six spots in the national polls over the past three weeks.
Princeton went 2-3 last weekend against a tough schedule in California to move to 8-7 overall this season and 3-0 in league play. Two of Princeton's three losses over the weekend came to top-ranked USC and third-ranked Stanford. Princeton beat the 11th and 16th ranked teams and placed ahead of other highly ranked teams at the SoCal Tournament to leap to the 12th ranking. At 12th, Princeton is the highest ranked Eastern team in the poll.
Princeton was led last weekend by sophomore Jeff Cole, who scored 13 goals in the five games and was named the Southern Player of the Week for his performance. Other impressive performances were turned in by sophomore goalkeeper Mike Merlone, who made 50 saves in four games, and junior Mark Zalewski, who had four goals, including the quadruple overtime game winner against Redlands.
Cole's performance boosted him to the team scoring lead with 25 goals this season. That is three better than Zalewski and junior Douglas Wigley has 20 goals to rank third. Princeton has five scorers in double digits this season as junior Eric Breeland has 17 goals and senior Brendan Colgan now has 13. Vreeland continues to lead the team with 17 assists and Colgan now has 10.
Princeton visits Bucknell Friday night for its first of two games scheduled games against Bison this season. Bucknell is 9-10 this season and has a 1-2 Southern record. Bucknell also competed at the SoCal Tournament last weekend and picked up a win over Pomona-Pitzer in its final game of the tournament. The win snapped a five-game losing skid for the Bison.
Princeton will take on George Washington on Saturday morning at Bucknell in its second meeting of the year with the Colonials. Princeton topped GW 11-9 on Sept. 28 in a battle played at GW. Zalewski had four goals in the game and Merlone made 14 saves.
Princeton completes the weekend with a non-league game against Mercyhurst on Saturday afternoon. Princeton last played the Lakers last September and won 14-7 at home. The Lakers enter the weekend with an 11-4 overall record and a 7-0 mark in their league. Mercyhurst defeated Washington and Jefferson and Salem International last weekend.
