The 12th-ranked Princeton field hockey team visits Columbia and hosts Providence this weekend as it reaches the midway point of the 1008 season. The Tigers close a four-game set of road games and open up a five-game homestand this weekend.
Princeton enters the weekend on a four-game winning streak, which began two Saturday's ago at home against Dartmouth. In the time since, the Tigers have won four games, topping two league opponents and picking up two wins against top-20 teams. The Tigers also have wins over Penn State, Yale and Albany in the streak.
The Tigers outscored their opponents 12-4 last weekend, scoring six goals in each contest and winning 6-1 at Yale and 6-3 at Albany. Freshman Katie Reinprecht scored four goals in the win at Yale and senior Katie Kinzer got the other two. A day later, senior Holly McGarvie led the way with three goals at Albany, while freshman Kathleen Sharkey added two and junior Kaitlyn Perrelle had one.
Reinprecht led all Tigers in scoring for the week and was named the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week. She scored five goals and had three assists in three games. She also was named the Womensfieldhockey.com Rookie of the Week as she leads Princeton in all three offensive categories with eight goals, six assists and 22 points. McGarvie's 17 points ranks second and Sharkey's 16 is third as they are the only players in double-digit points.
Princeton's three-win week helped the Tigers gain three spots in the latest STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll. Princeton's wins over Penn State and Albany moved the Tigers to 3-1 against ranked teams this season. The Tigers have ranked opponents?Maryland and American?and teams receiving votes?Providence and Villanova?remaining on their schedule.
Princeton heads to the northern tip of Manhattan on Friday for its eighth road game and third Ivy League contest of the season. The Tigers have controlled the all-time series with Columbia, wining all 11 meetings. Princeton is 6-0 at Columbia in the series and won 3-0 last season at home. Senior Kraftin Schreyer, Paige Schmidt and senior Sarah Reinprecht all scored goals in the win while junior Cynthia Wray made two saves for the shutout win.
Columbia is 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League. The Lions opened the season with five-straight wins before a loss to Cornell last Saturday. Columbia has defeated William & Mary, Richmond, Quinnipiac, Fairfield and Brown this season.
After starting the year with eight of nine games on the road, the Tigers will close the season with seven of eight at home and that begins on Sunday against Providence. Princeton is 2-1 all-time against Providence and has won the only game played at Class of '52 Stadium. Last season the Tigers won 2-1 at Providence as Paige Schmidt scored twice and Wray made four saves.
Providence is 7-4 overall and 0-2 in Big East play. The Friars do face Villanova on Saturday prior to Sunday's game. Providence enters the weekend off two-straight wins, including Wednesday's 2-1 overtime win against No. 13 Boston College. Providence also has wins this season against Northeastern, Yale, Harvard and Dartmouth.
Princeton will play without three players on Sunday as they travel to Mexico City to compete for the United States at the Pan American Junior National Championship, which serves as a qualifier for the 2009 Junior World Cup, held next summer in Boston. The trio includes Katie Reinprecht, Sharkey and Perrelle. The trio will miss just one game and will be back with the Tigers for their next game on Oct. 14 against top-ranked Maryland.
