Jackson '06 Wins Age-Group at Ironman World Championships
October 20, 2008 | Women's Ice Hockey
Heather Jackson, a two-time women's hockey captain and a 2006 graduate from Princeton, recently won her age group at the 2008 Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Hawaii on October 11. Jackson was the top finisher among women ages 18-24.
Jackson palyed four years of women's hockey at Princeton and graduated with 89 points on 30 goals and 59 assists in 126 games. Her best season came as a sophomore when she recorded 30 points. She had 24 points as a senior helping to lead the Tigers to a second-place ECAC finish and the program's first NCAA appearance.
Jackson began her career as a triathlete during her summers while still at Princeton. After graduating she spent a year in Chiang Mai, Thailand in the Princeton-In-Asia program. There, Jackson competed in a triathlon in Phuket, Thailand in Dec. 2006, and then the Ironman Malaysia in Feb. 2007. After her year abroad, Jackson returned to the U.S. and competed in the Ironman Lake Placid in July 2007, which qualified her for last year's Ironman World Championship, in which she placed 10th in her age group.
Meanwhile, Jackson began teaching in San Jose, Calif., where she began training with other triathletes and joined Team Alcis, a triathlete team of 28 selected, elite, age group athletes. Having qualified again for the World Championship in Kona, Jackson began an intense training regimen in May building up to the event. She did five half-distance ironmans throughout the year to train for Kona.
And the training paid off in an age-group win for Jackson, who completed the course of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mike bike and a 26.2 mile run in 10 hours, 23 minutes and 55 seconds.
