Robinson, Quinn Sweep Weekly Ivy Honors In Volleyball
October 29, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
Senior Bailey Robinson and freshman Cathryn Quinn waited quite a while to play a home volleyball match in 2008, and they made sure that first weekend would be worthwhile. Both players played key roles in a sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth and were honored as both the Ivy League Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Robinson, the Ivy League leader in assists with 11.6 per set, led the Tigers to the key wins by averaging 13.8 assists and 3.29 digs per set. In Friday's sweep of Harvard, Robinson led Princeton with 45 assists and added two kills and eight digs. The next night, with the Tigers trailing upstart Dartmouth 21-14 in the fourth set, Robinson served the Tigers on an 8-0 run that ultimately helped the defending Ivy champ avoid a fifth set. Robinson, who led the entire nation in assists a year ago, would end the match with 52 assists, 15 digs and three kills
Quinn, playing for the first time ever at Dillon Gym, averaged 3.57 kills per set and led the Tigers in attack percentage (.432) over the weekend. Quinn came up big on Friday night, posting team-highs with 14 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. She was solid again the following night, helping Princeton during its dramatic 8-0 run against Dartmouth with a pair of kills and a block in the decisive fourth set. She ended the match with 11 kills and two digs. Quinn ranks second in Ivy League hitting percentage with a .378 average; she trails only senior teammate Lindsey Ensign (.413).
Princeton, the reigning Ivy League champion, remains home this weekend to take on Cornell Friday night at 7 and Columbia Saturday at 4. Entering the weekend, Yale leads the Ivy League with a 7-1 record, while Princeton stands one half game behind at 6-1. The Big Red, which won the Ivy title in 2006, is 6-2 and can stay in the hunt with a victory over Princeton Friday night. Columbia is 0-8 in league play.
