Princeton got its season underway a week ago by splitting a two-game set at home against Connecticut. The opener went the way of the Huskies as UConn outshot Princeton 36-23 and pulled ahead in the second half of the second period with two goals in a 3-0 shutout.
The Tigers however bounced back the following day with a 4-1 win. Freshman Charissa Stadnyk redirected a point shot on the power play 4:41 into the game to put the Tigers ahead in a game they would never trail. Princeton padded its lead with goals from senior Katherine Dineen and freshman Danielle DiCesare in the second period and sealed the win with sophomore Sasha Sherry's empty netter. Princeton was again outshot, but senior goaltender Kristen Young made 29 saves for the win.
With two points, a goal and an assist, in Saturday's win, Sherry finds herself as Princeton's leading scorer. Sherry is Princeton's second-highest returning scorer from last season. Nine players rank just behind her with one point apiece. Among the players with one point are Stadnyk, DiCesare, freshman Heather Landry and freshman Paula Romanchuk, who all collected their first collegiate points in Saturday's win.
Princeton's loss on Friday marked a run of four-straight ties for the Tigers in their season openers. It was also Princeton's first-ever loss to UConn. With its win the following night, Princeton is now 8-1-2 all-time against the Huskies.
ECAC play is next on the horizon for the Tigers, who kick off the league season on Friday night against sixth-ranked Dartmouth. Princeton leads its all-time series with the Big Green 34-25-4 and is 18-8-4 in the series at home. The two teams tied 2-2 in their final meeting last season, but Dartmouth is unbeaten against Princeton in the past two seasons at 3-0-1.
Dartmouth has yet to have a game this season. The Big Green finished third in the ECAC a season ago with a 13-5-4 league mark and an 18-9-6 overall record. Dartmouth was picked to finish third in the ECAC coaches preseason poll.
Princeton will complete its weekend against third-ranked Harvard. Princeton trails the all-time series 35-25-2 and the teams are at .500, 14-14-1, in games played in Princeton. Harvard has won the last four meetings, including 3-2 and 3-1 wins last season.
Like Dartmouth, Harvard is opening its regular season this weekend. The Crimson, however, did take on McGill in exhibition action last weekend and posted a 3-2 win. Harvard won the ECAC Championship last season with a 22-0 league record and a 32-2 overall mark. The Crimson were the top choice in the ECAC coaches preseason poll, garnering 10 of 12 first-place votes.
