Ivy Field Hockey Title to be Decided Saturday at Cornell

The Ivy League field hockey title and the league's automatic bid to an NCAA Tournament play-in game are on the line Saturday when the 11th-ranked Princeton field hockey team visits Cornell at 12 noon. Both teams are currently unbeaten at 5-0 in league play.
Princeton is looking for its fourth straight Ivy League title and its 13th championship in the last 14 seasons, while Cornell last claimed an Ivy title in 1991. Cornell was the runner-up to the Tigers in each of the past two seasons. This season, each is a perfect 5-0 in Ivy League competition. Princeton has outscored its Ivy opponents 25-4 while Cornell has doubled its opponents 14-7.
The Tigers moved to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in league play last Saturday with a 5-0 shutout of Harvard. The win was Princeton?s fourth shutout of the season and was the 11th time this season Princeton has held its opponent to two goals or less. Senior Kraftin Schreyer and freshman Kathleen Sharkey each scored two goals in the win while senior Katie Kinzer scored the final goal. Senior Candice Arner and junior Kaitlyn Perrelle both had two assists in the win. Sophomore Jennifer King made a save in the shutout.
Princeton?s win lifted the Tigers to No. 11 in the STX/NFHCA Coaches Poll, its highest ranking of the season. Princeton is 2-2 this season against ranked teams with wins over Penn State and Albany and losses to UConn and Maryland. The Tigers have one ranked opponent, No. 19 American, remaining on their schedule, while both Cornell and Penn, Princeton?s two other opponents received votes in the latest poll.
Princeton will look clinch the Ivy title Saturday against Cornell, the last team to beat the Tigers in Ivy competition. Princeton had won 16 Ivy games in a row from the 2005 season until its game with Cornell a season ago. The win was Cornell?s first in 15 tries in games played in Princeton. Senior Holly McGarvie scored two goals in the win and junior Christina Bortz had one. The Tigers will look to avenge that loss on Saturday. Princeton is 23-4-3 all-time against Cornell and is 10-3-2 in games played in Ithaca. Cornell?s win last year ended a 15-year winning streak for the Tigers.
Cornell is 10-4 overall and 5-0 in league play. The Big Red enters Saturday?s showdown winners of its last six games and has taken nine of its last 10 games. Cornell has wins over Yale, Lehigh, Colgate, Bryant, Harvard and Brown in its latest stretch and is a perfect 5-0 at home this season.
