Volleyball Maintains Ivy-Winning Ways, Routs Penn In Road Opener
October 04, 2008 | Women's Volleyball
When the Princeton women's volleyball team became the first team to go 14-0 in Ivy play last year, it did so by opening with a five-set thriller over Penn. Regardless of how the 2008 league season may end, the beginning caused much less anxiety for Tiger fans. Princeton held the Quakers to a .010 attack percentage and cruised at The Palestra to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-10 victory.
The win is Princeton's third straight and improves the Tigers to 7-2 overall, 1-0 in league play. Penn falls to 4-9, 0-1 in the Ivy League.
Reigning Ivy League Player of the Year Parker Henritze posted one of her best performances of the season when league play began. She recorded the lone double-double of the match with 13 kills and 11 digs and hit .391 in the win. She recorded the match-winning kill for Princeton, which will head to Columbia and Cornell next weekend. Middles Lindsey Ensign and Cathryn Quinn combined for 13 kills to only four errors, and Ensign added six blocks on the defensive side. First-team All-Ivy setter Bailey Robinson led the Tiger offense with 31 assists, while freshman libero Hillary Ford recorded six digs in her league debut.
Princeton came out on fire, hitting .357 in the opening game, but a less efficient performance in the second set made for a closer outcome. A pair of 3-0 runs midway through the set and several sideouts on the Penn serve assured Princeton a lead throughout the set, and a Quaker service error gave the Tigers a 25-19 win. The final set belonged to the Tiger defense, which recorded four blocks and limited Penn to a -.176 hitting percentage.
