Reinprecht Named Ivy League Player of the Year
November 12, 2008 | Field Hockey
Freshman Katie Reinprecht led the way as the Princeton field hockey team claimed the Ivy League's Player and Rookie of the Year honors and placed eight on All-Ivy teams. Reinprecht was the league's Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection.
Reinprecht was selected unanimously by the coaches as the Player of the Year, marking the first time in the 28-year history of the award that a freshman has been selected. Averaging 2.33 points per game over the course of the season, the freshman set a torrid pace in Ivy play, with seven goals and five assists. Overall she has 13 goals and 12 assists for 38 points. Twice the League's Player and Rookie of the Week, Reinprecht was one of four Tigers selected first-team All-Ivy.
Reinprecht becomes the 12th Princetonian to claim the superlative award from the league. The Tigers have had the league's Player of the Year in eight of the last nine years.
Senior Sarah Reinprecht, senior Holly McGarvie, senior Kraftin Schreyer and freshman Kathleen Sharkey joined Katie Reinprecht as first-team All-Ivies. McGarvie returned to the first team after earning her first nod in 2006 and receiving second-team honors a year ago. The senior contributed 12 goals and four assists in the 2008 campaign for her third overall all-league selection.
Sarah Reinprecht was named a first-team All-Ivy selection for the third time in her career and was a second-team selection as a freshman. A strong defender, Reinprecht has two goals and seven assists this season. Another member of Princeton's stingy defense, Schreyer, was also named to the first team. The senior had nine goals and six assists for the Tigers.
Sharkey was chosen by the coaches as the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year. Princeton's leading goal scorer with 14, Sharkey, also earned a first-team nod from the Ivy coaches. Named the Ivy Rookie of the Week on two occasions, the freshman was second only to Katie Reinprecht in total Ivy points. Sharkey is Princeton's 15th Ivy Rookie of the Year.
In addition to the Tigers five first-team selections, Candice Arner earned a second-team nod with junior Kaitlyn Perrelle and senior Kristin Schwab receiving honorable mentions. All three have a second-team All-Ivy selection already on their resumes.
