Princeton Downs American 5-2 in Battle of Top 20 Teams
November 02, 2008 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON -- The 11th-ranked Princeton field hockey team used four second-half goals to rally from a halftime deficit and defeated 19th-ranked American 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Class of '52 Stadium. The win was Princeton's fifth in a row and its third over a ranked team this season.
Princeton opened the scoring just 1:31 into the game when senior Candice Arner flipped a hot over American goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman after a centering feed from senior Katie Kinzer. The Tigers held the lead for 25 minutes before American scored two goals to take a 2-1 lead to the break. Emily Stovicek scored the forst goal when she redirected a pass into the top of the cage and Megan Henry scored the second goal on a scramble in the Princeton circle.
Play was even in the first half, but the Tigers stepped up their pressure in the second half to secure the win. The Tigers outshot American 17-1 in the second half and had eight corners during the second stanza.
Senior Kraftin Schreyer drew Princeton even three minutes into the second half with her ninth goal of the season. Off a penalty corner, senior Sarah Reinprecht dropped the ball to Schreyer, whose blast from the arc was just inside the far post.
Princeton continued to pressure following the goal, and eventually went ahead for good in the 59th minute. Freshman Katie Reinprecht played the ball into the circle where junior Christina Bortz swept it into the far corner of the goal for her fifth of the season. Freshman Kathleen Sharkey gave the Tigers a two-goal lead a minute later when she batted a rebound into the goal for her 11th of the season.
Kinzer completed the scoring in the final minute when she stuffed junior Kaitlyn Perrelle's crossing pass into the goal on a corner attempt.
Princeton outshot American 24-5 and outcornered the Eagles 12-2. Princeton sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer King made two saves for the win, while Poorman made 11 in a losing effort.
Princeton moved to 14-2 with its fifth win in a row. The Tigers will complete their regular season next Friday night against Penn at 5 p.m.
