Thirteen Women's Basketball Players Contribute Points in 88-41 Win
November 22, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/22/08) ? Sophomore Addie Micir contributed a season-high 20 points in Princeton's 88-41 win over Stony Brook in the women's basketball home opener on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Jadwin Gym.
The Tigers' 88 points is the most points they have scored since a win over Yale in February of 2007. The win is also Princeton's first over Stony Brook in series history.
Stony Brook earned its first points on the first basket of the game but wouldn't earn another point until 15:26, as Princeton went on a 13-0 to start the game. With the Tigers up 13-4, the teams traded buckets for the next eight minutes. The Seawolves only got as close as seven points, before Princeton went on another scoring run. The Tigers closed out the first half on a 17-6 run to take a 43-18 lead at halftime.
The second half started much like the first, with the teams trading points. Through the first eight minutes Princeton had added 15 points onto its lead, while Stony Brook put 10 points onto its side of the scoreboard to sit at 58-28. Less than a minute later, Princeton found another hot streak sparked by a pair of free throws by senior Caitlin O'Neill.
The Tigers would hold the Seawolves scoreless for an entire five minutes and padded its lead by 13, to take a 77-30 edge. Kairsten Nunn finally found the net at 5:36 to end Stony Brook's drought but the damage had been done. A few baskets later, Princeton had its largest lead of the game, a 49-point differential, at 81-32. Stony Brook tallied the next six points and Princeton answered back with five, and each team scored three in the final minute for the 88-41 final score.
Fifteen of Micir's 20 points came from behind the arc. Also having hot hands at the arc was freshman Laura Johnson, with three three-pointers. This was her first game in double digits, scoring 11 points and adding a game-high four assists. Classmate Devona Allgood led the Tigers under the basket with 10 rebounds. Thirteen of Princeton's 14 players had two or more points, and the same number of players had at least one rebound. The Tigers finished the game with 18 more rebounds than their opponent.
Princeton shot 57.7 percent for the game (30-52) and had 12 three-point baskets. The squad was impressive again from the free throw line, shooting 80 percent (16-20). Stony Brook finished the game shooting 33.3 percent (17-51), and was just over 50 percent at the charity stripe (7-12). The team was 0-for-3 from the three-point line and did not make a single trip to the free throw line in the first half.
Princeton (2-1) hosts Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
