November 25, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/25/08) - Three players were in double digits in points to lead the Princeton women's basketball team to a 62-47 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Jadwin Gym. The victory is the Tigers' second straight, as they improve to 3-1 on the season, the best start since the 2001-02 season.
Sophomore Addie Micir had 13 points and seven rebounds, and added two assists, two blocks and two steals. She also shot 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior Whitney Downs was also in double digits, with 11 points. She contributed six boards and caused two turnovers. Freshman Lauren Edwards had a 10-point game, chipped in four rebounds and had two assists, two blocks and a team-best three steals.
FDU was led by Christy Altamirano who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She and teammate Alyssa Mayrose each had three assists, and Mayrose grabbed 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Knights grabbed the early lead sparked to a three-point basket by Mariyah Laury to start the game. The squad went up by six, 7-1, before the Tigers battled back and went on an 8-0 run to take the two-point edge. The teams traded baskets during the next few possessions before a layup by freshman Devona Allgood sent Princeton on another 8-0 run, setting the Tigers ahead 19-12. FDU added the game's next five points to pull within two, but that would be as close as it would get in the half. The teams finished out the first trading baskets with Princeton taking a 27-22 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers came out in the second and went up by five more points with a layup by junior Cheryl Stevens and a bucket by senior Jessica Berry in the first three minutes. FDU once again came within two, 31-29, as Altamirano and Mayrose teamed up for the next seven points. Princeton regained a 10-point lead just five minutes later. The teams would continue to trade points but the Knights could only get within four points of Princeton. The Tigers grabbed their largest lead of the game, a 12-point differential, with 3:24 to play and continue to pad the lead in the final minutes for the 62-47 win.
Princeton shot 34.3 percent for the game and went 14-for-18 from the free throw line. The squad picked up 15 steals, the most in a game since January 3, 2005 when Princeton stole the ball 15 times from St. Peter's. Coincidentally St. Peter's is the next opponent on FDU's schedule. The team also had eight blocks, the most in a game since the Dartmouth contest in February 2007.
FDU shot 34.5 percent for the game, and hit 6-of-17 three pointers. The team only went to the line six times and hit half of its shots.
Princeton will take a three-game break from Jadwin Gym with its first stop at Lehigh on Sunday, Nov. 30. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
