The Princeton women's hockey team closes out the first part of the season this weekend with a pair of games at third-ranked and defending National Champion Minnesota-Duluth. The Tigers' trip to the state of Minnesota is its first since the 2005-06 season.
Princeton enters the weekend with a 6-7-1 overall and a 4-5-0 ECAC Hockey record. The Tigers went 2-1 last week in league action, picking up wins over Quinnipiac and Union, before being tripped up by Rensselaer on Saturday in their last game. The loss snapped a stretch where Princeton had gone 4-1-1 and had climbed back to .500 after a slow start.
Princeton's four points over the week put the Tigers in a tie with Cornell for sixth in the ECAC standings with eight points. With 13 league games remaining, the Tigers sit five points behind a first-place tie between Dartmouth, Rensselaer and St. Lawrence, but only two spots ahead of eight-place Yale and Colgate, which represents the final playoff slot for the post season.
Junior Melanie Wallace led the Tigers offensively last week with five points in the three games. She had an assist against Quinnipiac, two assists against Union and a goal and an assist against Rensselaer. Her 14 points ranks her tied for the team lead in points with sophomore defenseman Sasha Sherry and her 11 assists is tops on the team. Senior Christine Foster also had five points over the three games. All five were assists.
Princeton is currently 2-2-1 in non-league play this year and will play its final two non-conference games this weekend in Duluth. So far, all five non-conference games have come against teams from Hockey East.
The Tigers last played Minnesota-Duluth nine years ago in Princeton when the Bulldogs took three of four points from the Tigers. The teams tied 2-2 in the first game of the series and UMD won the second game 3-0.
Princeton's trip to Minnesota is its first for a regular season game since the team visited St. Cloud State in December of 2000. More recently Princeton played at Minnesota in the 2006 NCAA tournament. The last time the Tigers faced a WCHA team came during the 2006-07 campaign when Ohio State visited Baker Rink for a pair of games. Princeton's nine games with Ohio State are the most against any WCHA opponent. Princeton has faced Minnesota six times, Duluth and St. Cloud twice and Wisconsin once. Princeton has not faced Bemidji State, Minnesota State or North Dakota.
The Bulldogs are 11-5-2 overall and 7-5-2 in the WCHA this season. They enter the weekend having won seven of eight games, including a two-game sweep of Bemidji State last weekend. Dartmouth is the only common opponent faced by both Minnesota-Duluth and Princeton. Princeton fell to the Big Green 3-2 early in the season, while UMD swept the Green two weekends ago in Duluth by scores of 2-1 and 4-1.
After the weekend the Tigers are off for 19 days for the holiday and return to action on Jan. 3 at Harvard.
