December 13, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (12/12/08) ? Freshman Devona Allgood powered the Princeton women's basketball team to a 52-41 win over Monmouth on Friday, Dec. 12 at Jadwin Gym. Allgood scored a career-best 11 points, five blocks and three steals and led the team in rebounding with seven.
“I couldn't be more happy for Devona,” Coach Banghart said. “She just played well all over the floor and we have been looking for it.”
The Tigers started the game on a 9-0 run, with the Hawks shooting 0-17 until they finally put their first basket away at 10:37. Following a Princeton bucket, Monmouth scored the next five points to inch within four, 11-7, at 8:18. Senior Whitney Downs hit a jumper, and freshman Lauren Edwards hit two from the same location in the paint to put the Tigers up by 10 points, 17-7, at 5:07. A three-pointer by Downs and a layup by Allgood gave the Tigers its largest lead of the half, 22-9, with 3:25 to play in the half. A layup by LaKia Barber at 1:53 sent the Hawks on a 7-0 run, before senior Julia Berger ended the Princeton scoring drought with a jumper in the lane with 15 seconds to play.

Sophomore Addie Micir scored five points and Berger drained two free throws to give the Tigers a 41-22 edge at 11:55. In the next three minutes it was all Allgood, as she nailed two free throws, sank two buckets and had a killer block before picking up her fourth foul and taking a seat on the bench. Allgood's six points gave Princeton its largest lead of the game, a 23-point lead, at 8:23, 47-24.
Princeton foul trouble sent Monmouth to the line 16 times in the next 2:49, and the Hawks drained 11 to bring the score to 48-35 with just over five minutes to play. Two more Monmouth baskets brought the Hawks back to a single-digit deficit, 48-39 with just under two minutes to play.
Micir ended Princeton's 4:47 scoring drought with back-to-back baskets, putting the Tigers up by 13, 52-39. Barber closed out the scoring with a layup with 16 seconds remaining.
“What's frustrating is that it takes a lot of physical and mental toughness to execute under pressure and I thought we were soft in that regard," Coach Banghart said. "Having said that ? we've gotten a lot better. To not be happy with our performance tonight shows our growth, and our kids aren't happy either.”
Barber led the Hawks with a game-high 15 points. Alexis Scott contributed 11 points and nine rebounds, and Bender collected nine points and 10 boards.
Allgood wasn't the only Tiger with 11 points. Downs and Micir also ended the night with 11 points apiece. Downs chipped in six rebounds and two steals.
The Hawks shot 19 percent for the game (12-of-63) and was 65.4 percent from the line. The Tigers shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe. Setting the Hawks apart, was its 49 fouls, including 33 offense boards, to the Tigers' 33. Almost half of Monmouth's points were second-chance points, scoring 20.
The Tigers are undefeated at home with a 3-0 mark and are 4-4 overall. Monmouth falls to 4-5 on the season.
