December 14, 2008 | Women's Basketball
PRINCETON, N.J. (12/14/08) ? It was a game that saw each team trade runs, and in the end it was Sacred Heart that ended with a run to take a 64-56 game from Princeton in women's basketball at Jadwin Gym on Sunday, Dec. 14.
The Tigers went on a 12-5 run in under four minutes to cut the Pioneer's lead to three, 56-53, with 3:26 to play.
Sacred Heart's Alisa Apo had an unconventional three-point play which sophomore Addie Micir washed away with a shot from behind the arc with just over two minutes to play, setting the score at 59-56. Sacred Heart scored four free throws in the waning minutes, while Princeton couldn't capitalize on its final three possessions with senior Whitney Downs, Lauren Edwards and Micir missing shots.
“We had the ball in the hands of who we wanted it to be,” Coach Banghart said. “Whitney and Lauren's shots were both in-and-out. It just didn't fall. In close games at the end we need to make plays, and their kids made more plays ? so they won.”
The teams traded scoring runs in the first 10 minutes. Sacred Heart started the game 6-0 before Princeton responded with a 7-0 run, during which the Tigers forced their opponent into two shot-clock violations. The Pioneers answered with a 5-0 run to make it 11-7, in their favor.
“I felt like anytime we went on a good run they were able to neutralize it,” Banghart said. “The plus is that we can fight back when we are behind, but the down side is that it's exhausting.”
Micir drained a three pointer to get the Tigers within one, 11-10, at 11:39. Sacred Heart scored on back-to-back layups to make it a 15-10 game. Micir was fouled on a three-point shot at 9:29 and sank all three baskets. She followed up with a layup to tie the game at 15 apiece at 9:04.
Sacred Heart hit its next two shots, and Princeton's Edwards and Downs combined for three points to make it 19-18 Sacred Heart at 7:20. The Pioneers closed out the first half on a 12-4 run in the final 6:05 to end the half, 31-22.
Downs opened the second half scoring four points, putting Princeton down by just five, 31-26 at 17:39. Sacred Heart responded with six free throws and a basket in three minutes, while Princeton had two baskets to put the Tigers down by nine, 39-30 at 14:29.
Freshman Laura Johnson cut the Pioneers run with a jumper, sparking a 7-2 Princeton run over the next 1:49, to put the Tigers within four, 41-37 at 12:26. Sacred Heart's Maggie Cosgrove scored a three but Edwards put away two baskets to make is 44-41, Princeton's smallest deficit of the half at 9:04.Less than two minutes later, however, Sacred Heart was up by 10, 51-41, after a 7-0 run.
Micir paced the Tigers with 16 points and seven rebounds, while senior Whitney Downs contributed 13 points and freshman Lauren Edwards added 10. Freshman Devona Allgood led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.
Kaitlin Sowinski recorded a double-double for Sacred Heart with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Alisa Apo and Maggie Cosgrove added 18 and 15 points respectively.
Princeton shot 28.6 percent from the field but had another solid outing at the free throw line, scoring on 12 of 14 chances. Sacred Heart posted a 38.5 field goal percentage, and was 70.4 percent from the charity stripe.
“When we're shooting around 29 percent and have a chance to win against a good team, it shows growth,” Banghart said.
Princeton falls to 4-5 on the season and will travel to the nation's capital next weekend for a pair of games, at American and George Washington.
