Syracuse Wins Battle of the Orange with 70-61 Victory Over Princeton

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (12/30/08) ? Despite not having a lead at halftime, Syracuse was the stronger orange team on the court today, as the team earned a 70-61 win over Princeton in women's basketball on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at the Carrier Dome. The Tigers had a one-point lead at halftime, but that lead would change seven times total throughout the game and was tied three times.
“We got good minutes out of everyone today,” Coach Banghart said. “Offensively we are at a much better pace the past two games and just like the last game, it was the late plays that could have gone either way, that made the difference. The way we played the last two games against two perennially great teams, it looks like we are on the right track.”
The teams traded baskets to begin the game and the Orange went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-4 lead at 15:11. Sophomore Addie Micir developed hot hands and scored two three-point baskets and another in the paint to give the Tigers a 12-8 lead. Micir added another bucket at 9:49 to get in double digits in scoring with 10 points. In the meantime freshman Devona Allgood added two layups to give Princeton an 18-13 lead, its largest lead of the half.
Syracuse held Princeton scoreless for the next four minutes and goes on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead with just over five minutes to play in the half.
Senior Julia Berger ends the Tigers' scoring drought at 4:49, but the Orange answer two two more baskets to earn a five-points lead, its largest of the half.
A three-pointer from freshman Laura Johnson sparks a 5-0 run for the Tigers as they regain the lead. Sophomore Krystal Hills nails back-to-back baskets to give Princeton a 28-25 edge with 13 seconds remaining. SU's Lina Lisnere tallies two free throws in the final seconds to set the Orange back by one, 28-27, as the teams headed into the locker rooms.
The Orange went on a 7-0 run to start the second half, to go up 34-28, but a three-pointer by senior Jessica Berry silenced the crowd. After the teams traded baskets, SU went on another 7-0 run in the next two minutes to gain a 10-point lead at 15:50. Julia Berger ended the scoring drought with a bucket at 15:30 but the Orange answered back to make it 45-35. Lauren Edwards brought the Tigers back within three as she scored the next seven points in the game to make it 45-42 at 12:35.
Syracuse continues to make its baskets going on an 11-3 run in the next three minutes and grabbed a 56-45 lead, its largest lead of the game, with 9:33 to play.
Princeton got back within three points on an 8-0 run with four of those points coming from Hill.
The Orange closed out the game on a 14-8 run led by Erica Morrow's eight points.
Micir and Edwards both had 13 points for the Tigers and Johnson added 11. Allgood led the teamon the glass with seven rebounds and Edwards and Berger each contributed six. Edwards also picked up four steals, while Allgood collected three blocks. As a team, Princeton shot 43.1 percent from the field, 40 percent from behind the arc and 69.2 percent from the free throw line.
The Orange were paced by Morrow's 21 points. Chandrea Jones added 19 points and Nicole Michael chipped in 14. Michael was also the team's rebounding leader with eight boards and Tasha Harris dished out a team-best six assists. Syracuse shot 43.4 percent from the field, 87 percent from the charity stripe and 33.3 percent from the three-point line.
Princeton (4-9) will close out the first half of its schedule at Lafayette on Friday, Jan. 2 at 7 p.m.
