The Princeton women's hockey team plays its final home games before the holiday break this weekend when Union and Rensselaer visit Hobey Baker Rink. The Tigers jumped to sixth in the ECAC standings with a win on Tuesday and will look to continue climbing this weekend.
Princeton enters the weekend 3-1-1 in its last five games dating back to a 4-1 win against Vermont on Nov. 15. Princeton split with St. Lawrence and Clarkson two weekends ago and skated to a 3-3 tie at Boston College last Saturday. Princeton returned to Hobey Baker Rink on Tuesday night and defeated Quinnipiac 4-2 for its fifth win of the season.
The Tigers have played nine games at home this season and just three on the road. After this weekend the Tigers play only four of their final 15 games of the season on home ice. Princeton begins that stretch next weekend with two games at Minnesota-Duluth, the defending national champion.
Eight Tigers recorded points in Tuesday night's 4-2 win. Senior Christine Foster and junior Stephanie Denino led the way with two points each. Denino scored the game-winning goal and then assisted on an insurance goal, while Foster had helpers on the game winner and Princeton's fourth goal. Princeton never trailed in the win but had the Bobcats come back from deficits of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Tigers sealed the game late.
Junior Julie Flynn scored her first goal of the season in the win and freshman Paula Romanchuk added her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Sophomore Sasha Sherry was held pointless in the game, but remains atop the team's scoring chart with 13 points on five goals and eight assists. Romanchuk is second with 11 points. Sherry leads all ECAC defenders in conference scoring and Romanchuk is tops among league freshmen in conference scoring.
Princeton will look to return to .500 on the season on Friday afternoon against Union. The Tigers are perfect all-time against the Dutchwomen at 10-0 and have won all four meetings that have been played in Princeton. Princeton has shut out Union in the last three meetings including a pair of 7-0 shutouts last season. Union is 2-13-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the league. Union swept Sacred Heart last weekend.
The Tigers complete the weekend Saturday versus Rensselaer. Princeton is 3-1-0 against the Engineers and is 2-0-0 at home. The Tigers won both meetings last year, blanking RPI 3-0 in Troy and winning 4-3 in overtime at home. RPI is 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. The Engineers are 7-1-2 in their last 10 games, with the only loss coming to first-place Dartmouth. The Engineers had a win and a tie at Robert Morris last weekend.
